Job Description

Join Assystem and help deliver one of the UK's largest infrastructure projects

Assystem is seeking an experienced surface water consultant / hydrologist to join our growing environmental team, supporting the delivery of the Sizewell C project.

This provides a unique opportunity to combine the support and career development of a global engineering consultancy with the experience of working at the heart of one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects. In this role, you'll be embedded as an integrated member of the project team while remaining part of Assystem's wider environmental practice. You'll benefit from the support, mentoring and career development opportunities of Assystem, while gaining invaluable experience working directly with one of the UK's largest construction programmes.

This is not a traditional design consultancy role. Instead, you'll provide technical oversight and assurance for surface water management across a major construction project, helping ensure that drainage, water management and environmental requirements are aligned throughout project delivery.

Working closely with environmental specialists, designers and construction teams, you'll review technical information, identify potential risks and provide practical advice to resolve issues before they become problems.

Role Summary

You'll act as a technical advisor on surface water management, supporting the successful delivery of construction activities across the project.

Your responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Reviewing technical reports and design information relating to surface water management.
  • Assessing the suitability of proposed drainage, attenuation and discharge solutions.
  • Supporting the management of surface water across both natural and engineered drainage systems.
  • Reviewing water quality information and interpreting environmental monitoring results.
  • Advising on appropriate approaches to water quality monitoring and discharge where required.
  • Supporting the technical review of information used within environmental permits and consents.
  • Working closely with environmental, engineering and construction teams to ensure a coordinated approach to water management.
  • Responding to emerging issues during construction and helping develop practical, risk-based solutions.
  • Providing technical feedback to design and project teams.
  • Identifying inconsistencies, technical risks and opportunities for improvement.

About you

We're looking for someone with experience of managing or reviewing surface water issues on complex infrastructure or construction projects.

You may come from a background in:

  • Hydrology
  • Surface water management
  • Environmental consultancy
  • Civil or environmental engineering
  • Water resources
  • Flood risk
  • Construction environmental management

You'll ideally have experience of:

  • Reviewing technical reports and engineering proposals.
  • Surface water management within construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding drainage systems and water movement.
  • Interpreting environmental monitoring data and water quality information.
  • Working across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Providing clear technical advice to engineers and project managers.
  • Knowledge of flood risk, environmental permitting and water quality assessment would be advantageous.

What we're looking for

The successful candidate will be:

  • Naturally inquisitive and able to identify issues before they become problems.
  • Comfortable reviewing complex technical information from multiple disciplines.
  • A pragmatic problem solver who can balance engineering and environmental requirements.
  • Able to build strong working relationships across design, construction and environmental teams.
  • Organised, proactive and comfortable working in a fast-paced project environment.

Benefits include

  • Pension scheme (8% company contribution / 4% personal contribution)
  • 25 days’ paid annual leave + bank holidays + option to buy or sell days
  • Professional fees reimbursed
  • Flexible working
  • Employee referral scheme
