We are seeking a Principal Compensation Consultant to serve as a senior compensation expert, leading the analysis, design, and governance of compensation programs that support our workforce and organizational goals. In this strategic role, you will partner across Human Resources, Finance, Payroll, HRIS, Legal, Talent Acquisition, and business leadership to ensure compensation programs are equitable, competitive, financially responsible, compliant, and aligned with Vitalant's mission, values, and long-term success.
Compensation: $133,000- $165,000 + incentive plan eligibility
This hybrid position is based in Scottsdale, AZ; Denver, CO; Chicago, IL; or Pittsburgh, PA, and requires working onsite three days per week and from a home office two days per week.

As a Principal Compensation Consultant, you'll get to:
Serve as a senior compensation subject matter expert, providing strategic guidance and recommendations on complex compensation matters across the organization.
Lead the design, administration, and continuous improvement of compensation programs, policies, processes, and governance practices.
Conduct job evaluations, job leveling, market pricing, salary structure development, FLSA reviews, and compensation benchmarking to ensure internal equity and market competitiveness.
Partner with HR, Finance, Payroll, HRIS, Legal, Talent Acquisition, and business leaders to support compensation planning, pay decisions, and organizational initiatives.
Manage and enhance annual compensation programs, including merit increases, incentive plans, bonus programs, and other variable pay initiatives.
Develop compensation recommendations for hiring, promotions, transfers, retention actions, reorganizations, and other employee pay decisions.
Analyze compensation data, market trends, internal equity, and financial impact to provide actionable insights and recommendations to leadership.
Ensure compensation programs and pay practices comply with applicable wage and hour laws, pay transparency requirements, and other regulatory standards.
Lead compensation-related projects, process improvements, technology enhancements, and vendor relationships to improve program effectiveness and operational efficiency.
Create and maintain compensation policies, guidelines, tools, communications, and documentation that support consistent and transparent pay administration.
Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and compensation best practices to recommend program enhancements and support organizational objectives.
Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical guidance to HR and compensation team members as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field required. Equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
Advanced knowledge of compensation principles, practices, and methodologies, including job evaluation, job architecture, market pricing, salary structure design, incentive and variable pay programs, internal equity analysis, and pay administration required.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour laws and compensation-related regulations, including FLSA, equal pay requirements, pay transparency, minimum wage, overtime, and related recordkeeping requirements required.
Knowledge of salary survey participation, market data interpretation, compensation benchmarking, and development of compensation recommendations required.
Knowledge of HR systems, compensation planning tools, reporting, and data integrity practices preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or progress toward CCP certification preferred.
Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Eight years of progressively responsible compensation or total rewards experience, with significant emphasis on compensation program design, administration, analysis, and consultation required. To include:
Five years of advanced compensation experience, including job evaluation, market pricing, salary structure administration, pay recommendations, and incentive or variable pay programs.
Experience providing consultative guidance to HR business partners, Talent Acquisition, Finance, Payroll, Legal, and business leaders on complex compensation matters.
Experience analyzing compensation data, internal equity, market competitiveness, and financial impact to develop recommendations for leadership.
Experience supporting compensation programs in a multi-site or geographically dispersed environment required.
Experience leading or supporting enterprise-wide compensation projects, process improvements, annual compensation planning, or compensation governance initiatives required.
Experience with HRIS, compensation planning systems, salary survey platforms, reporting tools, and advanced spreadsheet/data analysis tools preferred.
Prior experience preparing compensation recommendations, summaries, or presentations for senior leadership preferred.

Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive compensation and employee information.
Strong analytical, financial, statistical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
Advanced compensation consulting skills, including the ability to advise, influence, and build credibility with HR partners, Talent Acquisition, Finance, Legal, Payroll, and business leaders.
Effective oral and written business communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports, tools, presentations, and recommendations for leadership.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and execute multiple complex projects and deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, using discretion and professional judgment in ambiguous or sensitive situations.
Proficient computer skills, including advanced spreadsheet, reporting, presentation, and HR system skills.
