The apprentice role allows candidates to complete a sterile processing technician training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the SPD team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a sterile processing technician.This position is responsible for ensuring that all basic surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed and tracked in a quality / timely manner throughout the hospital. Will begin to train and validate competencies to allow performing these duties independently and without close supervision. Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations, promotes mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, and abides by service behavior standards, performs other duties as assigned. May be required to work overtime based on business need, may be required to float to other departments (within the scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need, may be required to be placed on call based on business needs.

About the Program
This opportunity for a paid apprenticeship was created to help fill staffing vacancies at designated hospitals with sterile tech vacancies.
In-person class and lab at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah on Mondays and Fridays.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be training in your specific Sterile Processing Departments 7am-330pm.
Hybrid/Remote class and lab at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, Montana and St.Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Class will start full-time on campus at LDS Hospital on Monday, August 3rd.
Upon completion of the 18 week program, you will be qualified to work as a sterile processing technician.
This Apprenticeship will teach and train you to learn how to pass the national certification test for Sterile Processing.

Essential Functions
- Completes Intermountain Health and Apprenticeship Program onboarding and training requirements, including orientations, required documentation, and all assigned training and testing, while maintaining satisfactory performance and attendance in alignment with program expectations.
- Ensures surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization standards.
- Prepares instruments and equipment for procedures under the direction of a preceptor.
- Performs the full instrument processing workflow, including disassembly, cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, labeling, and sterilization or high-level disinfection.
- Conducts, validates, and documents biological and chemical sterilization testing to ensure equipment is safe for use.
- Gathers and prepares instruments, supplies, and equipment for procedures and distributes sterile supplies and clinical equipment across hospital and regional sites.
- Operates and maintains Sterile Processing Department equipment and supports inventory management activities.
- Maintains positive relationships and communicates effectively with colleagues, customers, providers, caregivers, and vendors through clear verbal and written communication.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must attain Central Processing Certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) within one year of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Basic computer literacy
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
- Frequent interactions with customers that require employee to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer, phone, and cable set-up and use.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set-up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicle.
