Salary range: $63,401 - $84,640

The Accountant III is an intermediate-level professional position that reports directly to the Accounting Manager. This role is responsible for performing professional accounting functions, including procurement, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting activities. The position requires the ability to work independently while performing at a full professional level. Responsibilities include maintaining complex accounting records; processing invoices, checks, projects, journal entries, and reports; managing invoice receipts and daily reporting activities; running Oracle reports; submitting monthly reports; and following up on processed transactions.

Supervision Received:

Works under very general supervision. May work independently with responsibility for an assigned function or program. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.

  • Performs complex reconciliations of balance sheet and other accounts held by the city
  • Participates in monthly ledger close by preparing and/or ensuring the accurate and complete recording of financial transactions in accordance with deadlines as determined by management
  • Preforms trending and variance analysis for all balance sheet, revenue, and expense activity for assigned Funds. Identifies and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Process periodic journal entries for the departments to ensure transactions are complete with supporting documentation
  • Work on the day-to-day operations of accounting & accounts Payable operations
  • Assists in the documentation and monitoring of transactions
  • Participates in the development or updating of departmental policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with various Department employees, Financial System employees for the ongoing maintenance of processed transactions in the Oracle Financial System
  • Provide monthly reports on activities in excel format 
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial data
  • Provides professional assistance and support to management and staff as needed
  • Research analyzes, and corrects discrepancies or escalates to higher level
  • Answer questions from internal and external customers 
  • Identifies opportunities to further improve efficiency and effectiveness of processes & procedures 
  • May troubleshoot issues from lower-level staff
  • Performs other related tasks and special projects as required.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Principles and practices of governmental accounting
  • Knowledge of Procure to Pay process
  • Strong understanding of accounting theory and application of general accepted accounting principles and practices
  • Intermediate level hands on knowledge of all accounting functions and related internal controls, including cash, investments, intercompany activity and extensive balance sheet reconciliations
  • Governmental accounting principles, applicable laws and regulations, and financial reporting practices
  • Basic Information Systems applications for accounting functions
  • Oracle based accounting software is preferred
  • Effective Communication
  • Ability to work with Oracle ERP 
  • Extensive use of common office software including Microsoft Office and applicable specialized finance software applications
  • Performing complex analytical activities
  • Maintaining accurate records and making accurate arithmetic calculations
  • Work on several assignments simultaneously, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and working independently within established guidelines
  • Providing detail oriented and organized work
  • Working cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees and management to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results
  • Performing proactively and with flexibility

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, and 
  2. a minimum of six (6) years of related work experience to include 
  3. experience working in a government setting and direct experience working in a large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) environment and accounting systems.

Licensures and Certifications - None

Preferred Requirements Experience working with Oracle Applications preferred.
