The Vice President of Patient Care serves as a member of the executive team to ensure patient care, clinical and staffing standards are met for Methodist Hospital. Facilitates and supports quality initiatives and best practices in patient care. Develops and manages patient care budgets, strategies/plans, new patient services and partners with physicians and other team members to ensure workflow, compliance, communication and process improvement objectives are met.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

Develops the strategic plan for the Patient Care Division to ensure patient-centered focus, excellence and alignment with the organization’s strategic plan.

Develops, implements, and coordinates patient care services throughout the organization. Stays focused and driven to operational excellence.

Sets an example with personal behavior/commitment to Leadership Standards. Mentors, leads and guides the patient care leadership team members with role modeling and visibility.

Takes a longer term perspective on opportunities/problems. Creates an action plan for addressing opportunities/problems and effectively handles the situation when not resolved.

Provides leadership in the determination of clinical and administrative direction and goals.

Guides standards of nursing and clinical operations to ensure accreditation success with the various accrediting bodies for the organization.

In collaboration with the medical staff, physician leadership and hospital, participates in the development, implementation of excellent medical practices, evidence based standards, patient care programs and protocols to ensure safe patient care.

Promotes and demonstrates commitment to continuous Performance Improvement to ensure satisfied competent team members for the protection of patients and reduction of risk to the organization. Works collaboratively with the Quality Division to successfully develop and implement strategies to positively affect change.  

Facilitates research and use of evidence-based practice in clinical aspects of care.

As a member of the senior leadership team of Methodist Hospital, provides regular input into the planning and allocation of resources, program development, strategic planning and fiscal stewardship.

Takes responsibility for supporting and furthering the goals and objectives of the organization to the members of the Patient Care Division.

Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of revenue drivers and shares the knowledge, expertise and experience with the patient care leadership team.

Guides the day-to-day operations of the Patient Care Division to promote efficient and effective use of resources. Timely in follow through and resolution of issues. 

In collaboration with the campus leadership team and Methodist Hospital, facilitates the development of an annual budget forecasting revenue, expenses and capital expenditures.

  • Responsible for monitoring the performance of actual to budget, developing action plans to address variances, and reporting such to the Chief Executive Officer of Methodist Hospital.

Promotes an open-door policy and risk-taking environment to ensure open, honest communication among nursing staff, physicians, leadership and all other team members.

Provides clear performance expectations even with difficult messages.

Creates a comfortable environment for giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Serves as a professional role model of the organization’s leadership standards, mentor to motivate, develop, retain and recruit future leaders.

Serves as a change agent, assisting all staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change.

Serves as a representative to Nebraska Methodist College and professional organizations to remain current about nursing issues and promotes the image of nursing.

Actively participating on and chairing Boards, conferences and forums; by participating in the development of applicable programs and educational services and by participating in other events as necessitated by organizational direction.

Encourages leaders and staff to serve as representatives to local and national organizations and agencies to remain current about nursing issues and promote the image of nursing.

Aware of how the VP of Patient Care and the Patient Care Division affects other parts of the organization. Where appropriate, collaborates across the system to achieve systemness and standardization of safe patient care, policies, procedures and processes.

Role models and facilitates open communication and joint decision making.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Ph.D. preferred.


Experience

  • 10-12+ years clinical experience as a health care/clinical practitioner required.
  • 5-7 years progressively responsible experience in a middle to upper management position required.


License/Certifications

  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to act as a problem definer, problem solver, and negotiator while working with complex variables, including multiple departments and procedures, diverse groups and sophisticated, integrated systems.
  • Ability to use strategic thinking and analytical skills to leverage key initiatives, anticipate legislative and regulatory changes/mandates and enhance the meaningfulness of nursing work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial and legal information.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, mentor and evaluate personnel.
  • Astute leadership skills with timely follow through.
  • Knowledge of patient care, patient safety, optional healthcare outcomes and patient/physician/employee satisfaction measures.
