Your New Role

As a permanent, full-time Park Ranger 1, you will play a key role in protecting and caring for the landscapes, facilities, and resources within the Champoeg Management Unit. Each day brings variety as you work hands‑on to maintain park grounds, operate and repair facilities and equipment, and safeguard the natural and cultural resources that make this area meaningful to visitors. You will put your skills in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, landscaping, and general maintenance to work while also engaging in specialized program areas such as resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility and infrastructure operation, and park rule enforcement. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR

  • an Associate’s degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

  • Obtain and maintain one or more of the following after appointment, as applicable or required to perform duties of the position:

    • First Aid/CPR Certification

    • Enforcement Officer Status

Desired Attributes:

  • Skill in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.

  • Skill in the use of computer software or related technology to enter information, create, monitor, and process reservations and financial transactions.

  • Experience providing exceptional customer service working with the public in a park or related recreational setting.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with coworkers, volunteers, and other stakeholders to accomplish daily tasks, special projects, and assigned work.

  • Skill in giving direction concerning work procedures to individuals or teams composed of seasonal employees, volunteers, and adults in correctional custody in accomplishing varied tasks to achieve goals.

  • Skill in resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation and generating voluntary compliance with park rules and regulations.

  • Experience identifying and addressing safety hazards during daily operations and actively participating in safety meetings.
