Job Description Summary

The Pharmacy Laboratories Assistant supports sterile compounding laboratory activities within the MUSC College of Pharmacy. This temporary, hourly position plays a key role in preparing, maintaining, and supporting instructional laboratory environments and in teaching and training pharmacy students in sterile compounding practices, including compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards.

Job Description

The Pharmacy Laboratories Assistant supports sterile compounding laboratory activities within the MUSC College of Pharmacy. This temporary, hourly position plays a key role in preparing, maintaining, and supporting instructional laboratory environments and in teaching and training pharmacy students in sterile compounding practices, including compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards.


  • Support the setup, operation, and breakdown of sterile compounding laboratory activities 10%
  • Prepare laboratory spaces and materials to support instructional sessions 10%
  • Teach and train pharmacy students in sterile compounding techniques and practices 25%
  • Provide instruction and guidance on regulatory standards, including USP <797> and USP <800>, with emphasis on sterile and hazardous drug compounding 25%
  • Support a safe, compliant, and effective laboratory learning environment 10%
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure laboratory readiness and instructional continuity 20%

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and two years of experience or training within the specific work area.

Preferred Experience: 20 years of pharmacy technician experience and 10 years of sterile compounding experience

Some positions require certification in CPR by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. (4426 Dental Hygienist II) An associate degree in dental hygiene and licensure by the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry. Certification in Radiation Safety required for positions responsible for dental x-rays. (Special Hire Rate - $37,468)

Ability to lift objects from floor level to height of 36 inches, to 50#, unassisted. Ability to lower objects, to 50#, from height of 36 inches, unassisted. Ability to push/pull objects to 350#(+/-), unassisted. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet. Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually. Additional New Requirements: Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools, equipment as required.
