A Division 8 Estimator is a professional who specializes in specifying, detailing, and coordinating all the door openings and hardware for a building project, ensuring compliance with codes for fire, life safety, and accessibility. They work with architects, contractors, and building owners to create hardware schedules and specifications for non-residential projects. These experts handle everything from basic hardware to complex systems like electrified hardware and fire-rated assemblies, providing unbiased support throughout the project.
- Project consultation: Provide technical guidance to architects, contractors, and owners during all phases of a project.
- Code compliance: Ensure all door openings and hardware meet critical fire, life safety, and accessibility codes, as well as other building requirements.
- Specification writing: Create detailed specifications and hardware schedules for projects, often including complex electrified hardware and fire-rated assemblies.
- Coordination: Work to coordinate door openings and hardware with other building systems to avoid potential conflicts and ensure smooth installation.
- Product selection: Advise on the selection of the best products for a project, sometimes acting as an independent advisor to ensure the most appropriate and functional options are chosen.
- Project management: Assist with the project management aspects of door hardware, including installation coordination and sometimes even training for installation and maintenance personnel.
- Deep knowledge of advanced mechanical and electronic door hardware products.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and use computer-aided design (CAD) software, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with various project stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and solve problems in a high-pressure environment.
- High level of attention to detail is crucial for accuracy in specifications and code compliance.
