General Maintenance Technician I Department: Facility Services Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor FLSA Status: Hourly / Full-Time Schedule: Generally routine, but requires flexibility for evenings, weekends, and shared on-call emergency duty. Overtime may be required. Position Overview The General Maintenance Technician I assists with a variety of hands-on tasks encompassing most of the construction and building trades. This role requires basic technical troubleshooting skills, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to interact tactfully and courteously with co-workers, management, and clients. Key Responsibilities Systems Maintenance: Assist in evaluating, repairing, and performing minor plumbing (toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets), electrical (switches, receptacles, lighting, breakers, ballasts), and HVAC tasks (filters, belts, basic PM). General Building Repair: Handle basic carpentry, drywall prep, painting, and structural repairs (windows, doors, walls). Work Order Management: Receive, execute, and complete work orders in a timely manner while keeping accurate records of materials and labor. Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Proactively identify and fix potential safety hazards. Vendor & Fleet Support: Escort outside contractors or inspectors when needed; report complex issues to the supervisor. Maintain the company vehicle in good working order (refueling, logging monthly inspections). Qualifications & Skills Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a commercial or residential maintenance role. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A 1-year certificate from a technical school/college is a plus, but an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of basic HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently or as part of a team; must follow oral and written instructions and possess a customer-service mindset. Physical Demands & Work Environment Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach. Ability to safely carry, extend, and climb ladders. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Note: The work environment may occasionally expose the employee to infectious waste or diseases (including AIDS and Hepatitis B). Noise levels are usually moderate.
