Overview

We’re looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Locksmith to join our facilities team! In this role, you’ll handle the full scope of lock and door hardware services—from installing and repairing mechanical, electronic, and ADA-compliant locks to managing complex master key systems. You’ll also maintain access control records, respond to lockout situations, and ensure security hardware across campus meets safety, egress, and compliance standards. Responsibilities

  • Completes assignments based upon work order requests. 
  • Identify, install, maintain, adjust, repair, fabricate, rebuild, and replace lock cylinders and locks including combinations, electronic, ADA- approved locks and other institutional hardware, this includes working with specific keyway systems to eliminate duplications of keys outside of the University.
  • Install. Adjust, maintain, and repair exit door hardware, hinges, door closers, door hold opens, coordinators, and mechanical, electrical, and electronic access controls; keep buildings accessible by making necessary adjustments, repairs, or replacement of failed components.
  • Replace complete door units as needed to modernize buildings and to meet Americans with Disabilities Act and egress requirements. 
  • Generate, operate, and maintain multiple computerized databases to minimize duplication of master key systems through tracking and cataloguing of keys; maintains records and security files.
  • Select key banks to fabricate or duplicate keys; provide departments with keys as requested and ensure they are distributed to the proper personnel.
  • Open locks and safes when keys, combinations or electronic locks are inoperable; extract foreign objects from keyholes
  • Maintain records for individual departments with a record of access available for every room.
  • Communicate and consult with faculty, staff and students to explain methods and procedures related to keying databases and locksmith operations. 
  • Ensure proper hardware, locks, and restricted keyways are used, and ensure compatibility with existing hardware on campus. 
  • Estimate look and architectural hardware costs for new or remodeling construction.
  • Complete complex technical work and troubleshooting.  Other duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications

  • Familiar with trade tools, materials, and procedures

  • Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions

  • Skilled in specialty tools and repair techniques

  • Understanding of locks, security systems, doors, and closures

  • Knowledge of building codes, regulations, and university policies

  • Familiar with ADA requirements for building access

  • Ability to schedule and supervise staff

  • Experienced in training methods

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Completed related technical or vocational training

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Locksmith certification

  • Able to frequently lift 25-60 lbs.
