Job Summary
The Assistant Band Director is a vital, part-time position funded via a supplemental contract to support a rapidly growing band program. This role is designed for a dynamic, high-energy educator who will take primary ownership of the Pep Band program during athletic seasons and provide strategic instructional support to the Head Band Director. This position is ideal for an individual looking to impact student musicians, foster school spirit, and help manage the logistical demands of an expanding program without the requirement of a full-time daytime teaching schedule.
Key Responsibilities
1. Primary Ownership of the Pep Band
Direct Ensembles: Serve as the primary director for all Pep Band rehearsals and performances at athletic events (e.g., basketball games), pep rallies, and community functions.
Game-Day Operations: Manage student call-times, attendance, and logistics during athletic events, ensuring a high-energy, disciplined, and engaging atmosphere.
Music Selection & Coaching: Select and rehearse contemporary, crowd-pleasing "stand tunes." Focus on building a powerful, confident sound suitable for athletic venues.
Athletic Coordination: Liaise briefly with the athletic department or game-day staff regarding performance timing, national anthem logistics, and seating.
2. Supplemental Support for Program Growth
Instructional Assistance: Assist the Head Band Director during peak seasons (e.g., marching band camp, pre-festival clinics, or major concert preparations) by running sectionals or providing targeted feedback.
Retention & Culture: Act as a positive role model to help retain students as the program grows, ensuring that the pep and athletic band experience is fun, rewarding, and inclusive.
Logistical Support: Assist with equipment setup/tear-down for games and major performances as needed.

Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
Strong background in instrumental music (degree in Music Education or Music Performance is preferred, but experienced community musicians/advanced college music students with strong leadership skills will be considered).
Experience playing in or directing a high-energy athletic band (marching band or pep band).
Valid background check and fulfillment of all district/state safety requirements for supplemental coaches/advisors.
