Summary:
The Workers' Compensation Paralegal provides litigation and discovery support to the Workers' Compensation practice group attorneys. The role manages subpoenas and the discovery workflow, reviews and analyzes records, identifies key facts-including, and coordinates with providers, vendors, and experts. The position requires strong organization, initiative, and experience operating independently within defense litigation.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Draft, serve, and respond to discovery and subpoenas; track deadlines and deficiencies; maintain logs and ticklers; prepare and follow up on record and deposition subpoenas, including HIPAA compliance and chain of custody.
- Intake, organize, and summarize records; create medical chronologies; identify gaps and flag issues such as prior injuries, pre-existing conditions, and causation.
- Identify treating/referring and anticipated providers; coordinate IMEs and expert engagement; prepare expert notebooks.
- Conduct legal and factual research (LexisNexis/Westlaw); draft pleadings, discovery, subpoenas duces tecum, deposition summaries, and trial/pretrial materials.
- Manage calendars and critical deadlines; schedule depositions, hearings, mediations, IMEs, and related travel; coordinate with courts, clients, vendors, providers, experts, and opposing counsel.
- E-file in state and federal courts; prepare exhibit and hearing binders; coordinate court reporters and interpreters.
- Proven proficiency in defense Workers' Compensation discovery and subpoena practice.
- Expertise reviewing medical records, preparing chronologies, and mapping providers; ability to spot gaps and escalation issues.
Education & Experience:
- 3+ years paralegal experience supporting a Workers' Compensation defense practice group.
- Paralegal certificate or equivalent combination of education and experience; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Trial-prep exposure (exhibit lists, witness prep, trial notebooks); existing network of experts/providers or a defined plan to develop one; prior experience with the firm's (or similar) case-management system.
