The Global Asset Liability Management (GALM) group plays a leadership role in identifying and assessing ALM-related risks globally, while developing investment and risk management strategies to support the company’s business and financial objectives.
As a member of the Asia Asset Liability Management team, this role is responsible for in-force ALM risk management and balance sheet optimization across Asia markets. This is undertaken within the constraints of tax, capital, liquidity, accounting, and reserving frameworks. The role requires close collaboration with key local stakeholders, including the Head of Investments, CFO, CRO, Chief Actuary, and Pricing Officer, serving as the primary point of contact for ALM-related matters and problem resolution. In addition, the position may lead or support regional ALM initiatives, contributing to the design and execution of investment strategies and broader balance sheet management efforts.
Joining the Asia ALM team offers a distinctive opportunity to work within one of Asia’s leading insurance organizations in an investment-focused capacity. The role provides direct exposure to investment strategy development and implementation, while building deep expertise in asset-liability management within a dynamic and influential business environment.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the ALM representative, partnering with regional functions and local stakeholders (Head of Investments, CFO, CRO, Chief Actuary, and Pricing Officer) on ALM, product/pricing, investment, and risk management matters.
- Collaborate closely with the Toronto ALM team to develop, review, and enhance ALCO and other risk and investment reports.
- Monitor asset mix, quality, and duration against approved benchmarks, and recommend corrective actions for any breaches.
- Oversee the execution of key projects related to investment strategies and tactical asset allocation decisions.
- Develop and implement hedging strategies to manage risks while optimizing returns.
- Communicate complex business cases effectively to stakeholders across different levels of the organization.
- Support other ALM teams in the development and execution of investment strategies, reporting requirements, and ad hoc initiatives.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates strong ownership and work ethic, driving projects through to completion. Remains resilient in the face of challenges and applies creative problem-solving to overcome obstacles.
- Builds credibility with peers and senior management through strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, communicating technical and business topics clearly and concisely.
- Actively supports and develops junior colleagues, while serving as an ambassador for the team by fostering collaboration and engagement across Manulife.
- Works effectively in team environments, collaborating across functions, disciplines, and time zones.
- Brings actuarial or investment experience; professional designations such as CFA, PRM, or FRM are an asset.
- Has 12–15 years of relevant experience in investment management or financial risk management.
- Possesses strong knowledge of IFRS 17, fixed income investments, derivative hedging, capital markets, and local regulatory and solvency frameworks.
Problems / Challenges
- Aligns diverse stakeholder interests and perspectives to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes that support the company’s long-term objectives.
- Effectively manages multiple projects simultaneously while operating under tight deadlines and competing priorities.
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and accountability.
