Job Summary
The Faculty of Land and Food Systems is a leader in integrated research and global issues surrounding health and sustainable land and food systems, numbering approximately 45 faculty members, 80 staff, 180 graduate students and over 1500 undergraduate students.  Adopting a distributed integrated model, the Faculty is comprised of four major academic programs (Applied Biology, Food, Nutrition & Health, Global Resource Systems and Food, Resource & Economics), five research groups (e.g.; Animal Welfare, Biometeorology & Soil Science and Food Science) and four research centres (e.g. Wine Research, Dairy Education & Research, Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm). In addition to the Point Grey campus, the faculty has a satellite site in Agassiz.  The Faculty Computer Systems Technician provides technical support for computing systems for the Faculty.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager, Computing Systems, as part of the Faculty's Learning Centre Team and works closely with the Systems Analyst.  This position will interact with faculty, staff and students as well as liaise with IT services.   

Work Performed
Installs and troubleshoots for Faculty computer hardware and software.  This includes setting up and configuring new computers, networking, and peripherals, as well as performing hardware upgrades to existing equipment.

Monitors and installs software patches using SCCM.

Responsible for inventory tracking of all equipment purchased by the Learning Centre and updating when equipment is recycled.

Regularly services and maintains the loan out fleet of laptops, AV carts, and meeting room computer equipment.

Troubleshoots wifi and vpn issues for windows and apple devices.

Sets up, maintains, and troubleshoots printer devices. Monitors and replaces toner printer cartridges for staff office printers. Troubleshoots photocopier related issues.

LFS supported sites are distributed across the UBC Vancouver campus as well as the remote Dairy Centre in Agassiz, BC. There will be regular visits to these locations as part of the tasks.

Assist other Learning Centre Team members with video recording if tasked. These events can be elsewhere on campus.

AV support for LFS users in classrooms and meeting rooms.

Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors or poor judgment in computer software patching, hardware troubleshooting, and support functions could result in major inconvenience for the faculty, students, staff, and others.

Supervision Received
Works independently, under the general supervision of the Computer Systems Manager, however, reports directly to the Systems Analyst for day-to-day tasks.  Receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.

Supervision Given
Provides some direction to faculty, staff, students, and others regarding the use of A/V equipment, including laptops and LCD projectors, as well as computer facilities.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

·       Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in computer science, or other relevant discipline

·       Related experience in end user support, learning technologies or the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

·       Understands and relates to the academic University environment.

·       Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills.

·       Strong written and oral communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

·       High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

·       Good organizational and time management skills.

·       Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple projects at a time while meeting deadlines.

·       Demonstrated service orientation and good troubleshooting skills.

·       Comfortable working on projects independently as well as on a team.

·       Computer experience at an intermediate to advanced level in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Operating Systems (Windows, Mac OS), Web Management (WordPress), and unified communications and web conferencing (Zoom, Teams).
