Description
The SHEQ Advisor (Non-Hazardous Waste) is to collaborate closely with the SHEQ Manager in developing and implementing effective and achievable HSE plans, systems, processes, and procedures. The SHEQ Advisor will actively contribute to the SHEQ department’s support and assistance across all non-hazardous waste depots and associated non-hazardous waste divisions within ENVA NI, ensuring legislative and relevant ISO technical compliance and inspection readiness. The SHEQ Advisor will work in partnership with various departments within ENVA Group to promote a safe and healthy workplace, while also supporting the broader organisation in fulfilling SHEQ responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
The SHEQ Advisor (Non-hazardous Waste) role includes but is not limited to:
- Attendance and participation in weekly non-hazardous waste SHEQ huddles. Recording and tracking actions / areas of concern raised to promote timely addressal.
- Visiting each depot and where applicable transient activities regularly (minimum weekly basis) checking compliance on items such as fire, first aid, housekeeping, risk assessment, PTW, equipment inspections and the like. Recording and reporting on any non-conformances and hazardous conditions identified and in collaboration with the relevant stakeholder ensuring the timey actioning and follow up of any improvements required.
- Monitoring and auditing internal and external inspection and statutory testing of ENVA NI non-hazardous waste assets.
- Maintaining a structured SHEQ filing system for each ENVA NI non-hazardous waste depot and associated divisions.
- Planning, booking and coordinating all audits and accreditations (internal & external) activities.
- Carrying out internal audits of ‘compliance duties and inspection readiness’ for each ISO standard held or aspired to for each depot and division assigned to them, ensuring any findings or recommendations are actioned.
- Maintaining the ‘Compliance and Inspection Readiness Matrix’ for each non-hazardous waste depot and division assigned to them.
- Keeping abreast of KPIs and championing them within the business.
- Collecting, collating and submitting weekly SHEQ incident and KPI returns to the SHEQ Manager in a timely fashion.
- Supporting the SHEQ Manager in reviewing incidents including near misses in order to establish and implement learning and best practices.
- Developing or supporting the development and issue of Safety Flashes, Toolbox Talks and Briefing Sessions, as applicable.
- Supporting the SHEQ Manager in conducting regular reviews on health and safety policies, and procedures.
- Supporting relevant Management and Supervisory staff in the
- Development, amendment and review of general, site specific and legislative specific risk assessments and associated safe systems of work.
- Approval of contractors and management of approved contractors including periodic auditing of approved contractors SHE documentation and performance review
- Investigation of accidents, incidents including near misses and the identification and implementation of remedial actions to be taken to prevent a recurrence
- Ensuring the control, fit for purpose and accountability for all PPE stocks including issue of personal fall protection equipment and RPE and associated face fit testing, statutory inspection etc in use across ENVA NI Non-Hazardous Waste depots and associated divisions.
- Planning, booking and coordinating all SHEQ training requirements and courses for relevant employees.
- Carrying out internal SHEQ training for relevant staff.
- Participating in all planned / unplanned external SHEQ inspections and liaising with external bodies such as NIEA, HSENI, Client representatives and auditing bodies such as ARC 21.
- Actively participating in employee consultation and engagement forums including recording concerns raised and providing regular feedback on progress of remedial actions and / or initiatives to management and the workforce alike.
- Any other reasonable SHEQ tasks as identified by management, operational requirements and / or business need.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- NEBOSH General Certificate. Note: Candidates who have achieved the IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent) will be considered with the proviso that successful completion of the NEBOSH General Certificate is achieved within their first year of employment.
- As a minimum, experience with operational safety including completion of risk assessments and procedural documentation.
- Experience and knowledge in incident investigation and root causal analysis.
- Good knowledge of HSE legislation.
- Evidence of practical audit/inspection experience.
- Experience of delivering training to personnel of all levels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organised with the ability to prioritise effectively and to plan and manage own agenda.
- Logical in approach with the ability to analyse data and formulate action plans.
- Positive and motivated with flexible and adaptable attitude.
- Problem solving and solution focussed ability.
- Strong PC and technical knowledge and skills with an excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft packages including Word, Excel and Teams.
Desirable:
- Internal Auditors qualification
- Experience working within waste industry most desirable, however, alternate industries (manufacturing, oil, gas, fuel, construction) with relevant experience will be considered.
- Good conflict resolution skills.
- Good understanding of ISO 9001, 14001 & 45001.
Job requirements:
- Full-time role based in Carryduff.
- Regular (minimum weekly) travel to ENVA NI non-hazardous waste depots at Carryduff and Downpatrick MRF facilities which receive mixed general waste/C&D/Wood and produce SRF
- 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday by prior agreement
