
Welding Technician
Job Description
The Welding Technician plays a key role in driving welding innovation and production success by partnering with the Welding Engineering team to develop and optimize advanced welding processes while leading procedure development to support build readiness. Acting as a hands-on subject matter expert, they will supervise welders during testing activities, support data collection and analysis, and ensure high standards of welding quality across operations.
This role also leads projects to establish welding parameters for new applications, providing critical field support to production teams. Working closely with shop floor trades, the Welding Technician will troubleshoot challenges, improve workflows, and help maximize productivity while maintaining product quality and keeping projects on schedule.

- Lead welding procedure development and qualification activities to support build readiness and production needs.
- Develop, maintain, and improve technical welding documentation, providing clear guidance and support to the business.
- Evaluate new welding equipment and technologies, recommending solutions to enhance efficiency, capability, and quality.
- Provide hands-on, on-site technical support to troubleshoot welding issues and implement effective solutions.
- Supervise and support welders during testing and production activities to ensure procedures are followed and standards are met.
- Collect, analyze, and document welding data to support validation, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support Quality Control efforts in production by ensuring compliance with specifications and maintaining weld integrity.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and shop floor trades to resolve challenges, improve workflows, and optimize productivity.
- Contribute to maintaining project schedules by balancing quality, efficiency, and operational demands.
- Red Seal in Welding or Technical Diploma in relevant subject.
- A combination of experience and education will be considered.
- ASNT Level II in Visual Inspection or similar desirable (CWB L2 or ISO 9712 equivalent).
- Hold current multi-positional weld qualifications in FCAW and GTAW from CWB, DOL or a ICAS body.
- 5+ years of shipbuilding, naval, or defense experience is preferred.
- Excellent knowledge of FCAW and GTAW, with automatic and mechanized weld experience being desirable.
- Knowledge of weld procedure development in accordance with Lloyd's material rules.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
- Ability to independently learn to operate new technical software packages.
- Demonstrate knowledge relating practical aspects of welding and inspection.
- Ability to read and understand specifications and structural and outfit drawings.
Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
