The Opportunity: We are seeking a highly skilled Nurse (Registered Nurse) to provide comprehensive healthcare to youth at Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility. In this role, you will deliver professional nursing care, administer individualized treatment plans, and respond to medical emergencies.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses strong clinical skills, and is dedicated to supporting the health and habilitation of youth.
Core Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Assessment
- Provide professional nursing care to youth, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress of clinic out-patients
- Make nursing rounds; take and record initials
- Interview youth to obtain comprehensive medical histories
Instruct patients regarding health maintenance, wellness, and self-administered medications
Medication Administration and Inventory Control
- Prepare and administer prescribed medications and ordered treatment plans
- Maintain constant and exact inventory of all controlled drugs, medication, and medical equipment; order supplies
Chart and record all administered medications, treatments, and pertinent medical information accurately
Safety, Monitoring, and Emergency Response
- Conduct timely monitoring of restrained patients (e.g., lockups, detention, isolated)
- Provide immediate medical attention to emergencies, including administering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Evaluate emergency situations; counsel patients on the need for medical referral; contact the staff physician when necessary; arrange immediate transportation to hospital emergency rooms
Clinical Operations and Physician Support
- Assist physicians in the evaluation, treatment, and care planning of patients; assist with physical examinations
- Collect and test diagnostic specimens; administer vaccinations and medical injections (e.g., insulin, allergy)
- Schedule doctor appointments and arrange out-patient clinical appointments with specialists (e.g., dentists, psychologists)
- Prepare examination room; stock supplies; sterilize equipment
Complete all required reports (e.g., incident reports, accident reports)

Requires current licensure as registered professional nurse (RN) in the state of Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of Ohio Revised Code.

PRE-SERVICE TRAINING:
All new candidates hired to the Department of Youth Services are required to attend 3 weeks of mandatory, paid training at the Correctional Training Academy in Orient, Ohio. Training Academy hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Travel, meals, and lodging are provided.
