Technical Writer
Job Description
Itron is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water. We create a more resourceful world to protect essential resources for today and tomorrow. Join us.
Itron is seeking an energetic and motivated Technical Writer to join our team. In this role, you will contribute to delivering clear, accurate, and customer-centric documentation for a broad range of hardware and software solutions that support utilities worldwide. We are committed to supporting your growth as you learn our tools, processes, and technologies.
You are someone who enjoys becoming deeply technical in your craft—taking the time to understand products in detail in order to create high-quality documentation that empowers customers and internal stakeholders. You thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment and bring strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills to your work.
Duties & Responsibilities
Learn and apply Itron’s documentation tools, standards, and processes to create and maintain a wide range of customer-facing content, including administrator guides, installation manuals, developer documentation, integration and implementation guides, release notes, product bulletins, online help systems, and user interface text.
Produce customer-centric documentation that enables utilities to successfully deploy, operate, and maintain Itron’s technology solutions, demonstrating a strong commitment to clarity, usability, and accessibility.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including engineering, product management, support, and quality assurance—to gather requirements, validate technical accuracy, and ensure documentation aligns with product capabilities and customer needs.
Research and track product requirements, technical specifications, defects, and enhancements; proactively synthesize complex information into clear, concise, and actionable documentation.
Actively learn and use the products you document to ensure content reflects real-world application, helping drive high-quality, authentic deliverables.
Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously, aligning deliverables with software, firmware, and hardware release cycles while meeting deadlines and maintaining accountability.
Follow established style guidelines, voice standards, and best practices to ensure consistency across all documentation deliverables.
Create and maintain visual assets such as screenshots, diagrams, and workflows that enhance understanding and improve the user experience.
Prepare and structure documentation for localization, ensuring global accessibility for diverse customer bases.
Continuously seek opportunities to improve documentation processes, tools, and content, contributing innovative ideas that enhance team efficiency and product adoption.
Participate in agile workflows, including sprint planning and reviews, ensuring documentation remains aligned with evolving product development.
Required Skills & Experience
Demonstrated experience creating technical or procedural documentation, with writing samples that reflect clarity, structure, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of deliverables while remaining collaborative and responsive to team input.
Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliverables in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on inclusive, accessible, and customer-focused language.
Proven ability to learn complex technologies quickly and translate technical concepts into user-friendly documentation.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
A collaborative, accountable, and agile mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement and delivering value to customers.
Preferred Skills & Experience
Understanding of networking technologies and their application in large-scale systems.
Experience using technical documentation tools such as MadCap Flare or similar platforms.
Familiarity with the utilities and energy industry, including electrical systems or smart infrastructure technologies.
Basic knowledge of Linux or UNIX environments.
