Job Description
This role requires eligibility for a New Zealand Government Security Clearance. Candidates must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents with a verifiable background history. Applications that do not meet this requirement cannot be progressed.
About the Role
The AWS Public Sector team in New Zealand is looking for a Solutions Architect to work with customers across the national security, defence (NSD) and public safety sectors. You will partner with government agencies and their technology partners to design, prototype, and implement cloud solutions that support mission-critical outcomes in secure and sovereign environments.
This role focuses on helping NSD customers accelerate their cloud adoption journeys, from early workload assessments through to production-ready architectures. You will serve as a trusted technical advisor, translating complex mission requirements into practical cloud solutions using AWS services.
Key job responsibilities
Technical Leadership:
- Design and review architectures for secure, resilient workloads operating in classified and protected environments
- Lead technical engagements including proofs of concept, prototypes, architecture reviews, and Well-Architected assessments
- Advise customers on AWS security services, compliance frameworks (NZISM, NIST), and sovereign cloud patterns
- Drive adoption of modern services including AI/ML, containers, serverless, and data analytics within secure boundaries
Customer Engagement:
- Build deep, trust-based relationships with technical leaders across NSD agencies
- Translate mission and operational requirements into cloud-native solutions
- Deliver technical presentations, workshops, and immersion days for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Identify opportunities to accelerate customer outcomes through new AWS services and programs
Collaboration:
- Work closely with account managers, partner SAs, professional services, and specialist teams to deliver end-to-end customer outcomes
- Engage with NZ defence primes and systems integrators to support joint solution delivery
- Contribute to the broader NZ SA team through knowledge sharing, peer reviews, and community building
- Provide technical input to opportunity qualification, pricing discussions, and proposal responses

- 4+ years of specific technology domain areas (e.g. software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics) experience
- 2+ years of design, implementation, or consulting in applications and infrastructures experience
- 10+ years of IT development or implementation/consulting in the software or Internet industries experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a New Zealand Government Security Clearance (strong preference for candidates who already hold clearance)
- Experience working within software development or Internet-related industries
- Experience migrating or transforming legacy customer solutions to the cloud
