Compensation Range

The base pay scale for this position is $156,576.13 - $173,563.63. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to: scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.

What you will be doing

Key Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient histories; perform comprehensive and focused physical examinations
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests
  • Manage acute and chronic medical conditions
  • Triage patient inquiries and clinical concerns
  • Serve as a liaison to the infusion center by:
    • Collaborating with infusion center leadership, nurses, and staff to optimize operations
    • Providing clinical support for patients receiving IV therapies
    • Writing and correcting orders as needed
    • Managing prior authorizations, in baskets, and appeals to secure treatment approvals
    • Identifying and managing infusion-related reactions
  • Counsel and educate patients and caregivers on disease processes and care management outside the hospital setting
  • Building a clinical practice in collaboration with the supervising physician
  • Facilitating and improving the access of patients with OA by prioritizing consultation for these patients, coordinating care, and follow up
  • Deliver care both collaboratively and autonomously
  • Review outside medical records and coordinate with physicians to adjust treatment plans as needed
  • Provide education on treatment protocols
  • Prescribe medications and document all patient and caregiver interactions in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Support prior authorizations and insurance denials
  • Manage in-basket for the collaborating physicians including returning urgent call, medication refills, managing laboratory results
  • Attend conferences and share relevant updates with clinical staff
  • Utilize evidence-based practice guidelines

Minimum Qualifications

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) NPs/PAs are committed to personalized, high-quality healthcare and are held to the same legal and ethical standards of care as physicians and surgeons. 

  • Current New York State licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse and Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Board certification from ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Current NCCPA Certificate - 100 hours of continuing medical education must be logged every 2 years.  Recertification Examination must be taken every 6-10 years and passed successfully.  Current New York State registration.  Infection Control Certificate must be current.  Must have taken child abuse recognition course.

Order and interpret appropriate laboratory, radiographic examinations, and other diagnostic testing including but not limited to autoantibodies, inflammatory markers, x-ray, MRI, Musculoskeletal US

Formulate appropriate plan of care: Utilize and integrate results of laboratory, radiographic examinations, and other diagnostic testing into management plans

Prescribe medications and be able to: 1. Describe mechanism of action 2. Utilize appropriate dosing 3. Recognize, monitor, and manage adverse effects 4. Order and interpret appropriate laboratory monitoring 5. Document information needed to support medication decision making and the prior authorization process

Provide education and counseling on disease process, preventive medicine, and proactive care, including but not limited to: Traditional DMARDS, biologics and small molecules—Appropriate screening and management,  medication compliance and adherence, contraception, Lactation, Physical activity and exercise, occupational and educational accommodations

Perform procedures, as agreed upon by the supervising/collaborating rheumatologist and NP/PA including: Arthrocentesis and joint injection including but not limited to hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, and wrist.

OBJECTIVES: The NP/PA post-graduate trainee will be able to: i. New Patient: Perform a comprehensive history and physical examination including a detailed musculoskeletal exam and joint assessment ii. Follow-up Patient: Perform a disease-focused history and physical examination including musculoskeletal examination and joint assessment iii. Formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis iv. Order appropriate laboratory, radiographic examinations, and other diagnostic testing v. Utilize and integrate results of laboratory, radiographic examinations, and other diagnostic testing into management plans
