INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW: 

Are you a curious student interested in developing your personal skills in a corporate setting? Are you interested in business, sales, analytics, and problem-solving? Do you want to make a difference in people’s lives?  

An intern position with The Hartford gives you unprecedented access to learn in a real world, Fortune 500 environment. You will develop relevant skills and core competencies. An experienced professional Underwriter will be your supervisor as you gain key insights into the complex, fast paced world of Commercial Insurance!

  • Work on meaningful assignments that improve customer service and develop analytics to track our business 
  • Structured support from assigned supervisors during 2-week rotations through 3 Global Specialty business units (Environmental, Financial Lines, and Ocean Marine)
  • Scheduled mentorship sessions with Underwriting, Claims, Finance, Actuarial, and Innovation
  • Off-site meetings with external business partners and field trip with Ocean Marine
  • Scheduled session to meet and present to senior and executive leaders at The Hartford  

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: 

  • In this 6-week intern position, you will be responsible for: 
    • Engaging in the fast-paced day-to-day operations of a Hartford Underwriter
    • Active participation in mentoring sessions, meetings, special projects, and self-directed learning modules by preparing, asking questions and taking notes
    • Creating a Capstone Project to be presented to a large group, including senior and executive leaders at The Hartford 
    • Gathering weekly data and analyzing it against metrics such as monthly budget or sales goals
    • Writing emails to communicate results of analytics or the status of special projects

COMPETENCIES & SKILLS REQUIRED: 

  • Self-motivated to interact with new people and demonstrate mature, professional, and ethical conduct  
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships using effective oral and written communication skills
  • Curious and eager to learn new things and apply them to different situations 
  • Analytical problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities
  • Team oriented, collaborative and willing to accept feedback  
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills  
  • Focus on delivering positive customer experience 
  • Familiarity with business applications including Microsoft365

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Interest in Business, Sales, Finance, Data Analytics, Marketing, Actuarial Science
  • Prior engagement in school clubs or extracurricular activities as community volunteer, with leadership roles preferred  

LOCATION OF INTERNSHIP: 

  • One Penn Plaza New York, NY   

WORKING TIME / SCHEDULE 

  • Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week (Position is Temporary) 
  • Internship starts July 7 and runs through August 14 
  • Hybrid schedule with 2-days remote and 3-days in-office work
  • Working hours vary, typically 9AM – 5PM, with 1-hour lunch break

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / CONSIDERATIONS: 

  • Access to Public Transportation
  • Must satisfy employment eligibility requirements as established by the State of New York and The Hartford, including required background checks

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$17 - $18
