Job Description

The Clinical Educator will provide leadership and clinical expertise to support quality excellence in patient care by planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs to enhance clinical proficiency, quality improvement and team development. This role reports to the Manager, Clinical Practice, and collaborates with the emergency services leadership for department specific activities and clinical initiatives activities. This role intersects with multiple health disciplines and collaborates with other clinical educators across the organization for corporate orientation and corporate initiatives.

Accountabilities:

  • Promotes excellence within the Emergency Department/Urgent Care Centre through coaching and mentoring of staff
  • Develops, provides and evaluates educational programs, including orientation, skill certification, continuing education and professional development
  • Acts as a consultant to the team regarding nursing practice issues and functions as a role model and resource
  • Identification, interpretation and evaluation of continuous quality improvement indicators and implements education based on relevant quality and evidence-based practices
  • Acts as a consultant to the program director and clinical services Managers, drawing upon advanced knowledge of practice standards
  • Leads and/or participates in specific projects and/or functions, which support exemplary clinical practice and quality of care within the teams (e.g. policy and procedure development, quality of care reviews)
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum five years recent clinical experience in an emergency department with exemplary clinical practice
  • BScN required (Master's degree in nursing or education preferred)
  • Current ACLS required
  • Canadian Emergency Nursing Certificate, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course and Trauma Nursing Core Course required
  • Demonstrates proficiency in triage and is current in CTAS guidelines
  • Expertise with the critically ill adult and child population
  • Competence with monitoring equipment and arrhythmia analysis
  • Previous experience in clinical education in emergency within the last year preferred
  • A combination of experience and qualifications may be considered
  • Current member of National Emergency Nurses Association
  • Relevant experience in providing clinical education utilizing adult education principles and evidenced-based practice
  • Possesses relevant clinical expertise, integrates research into practice and promotes critical thinking in the practice environment
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of nursing practice standards ensures practice according to policies, procedures and standards of care
  • Experience in supporting the development clinical decision-making tools such as policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, project management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, develop, plan, and deliver educational material based on evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrated ability to consider multiple sources of relevant information (e.g. corporate and program plans, best practice, etc.) toward the development of a long-term educational plan for the program
  • Highly motivated, self-directed with demonstrated ability to provide leadership within an interdisciplinary team
  • Fluent in English (comprehension, reading, writing and speaking)
  • Excellent attendance and work record required
  • Computer literacy and skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Required to work and travel between all Osler sites

Hours: Currently days, Monday to Friday with some evenings and/or early mornings with flex hours to meet educational needs of nurses working specific shifts (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
