Description of Work
This position will serve as an Assistant Traffic Engineer for the Division One Traffic Unit. This position will be responsible for assisting with reviewing traffic impact analysis and project plans, performing general safety and mobility traffic studies, handling necessary coordination and/or inspection for projects under design and construction that the Traffic Unit is overseeing and attending meetings related to these items, as needed.This position requires professional engineering skills and knowledge to perform and evaluate investigations, such as requests for speed limit modifications, pavement-marking modifications, safety studies, etc. Perform geometric design; plan, review, and coordinate/review development traffic impact studies. Ability to prepare and administer contracts for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with the general public, governmental officials, contractors and DOT staff and employees. Thorough knowledge of the MUTCD. Promote safety and a safe working environment. Must be able to legally operate a State vehicle.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 - $57,983 - $101,470
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
- Experience with software such as Microsoft Office
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors
