| Position Summary |
Pre-K Teachers create a developmentally appropriate pre-kindergarten program where personal growth of children is fostered in a nurturing and culturally diverse environment; where there is a strong curricular emphasis on language development; where good relationships with families and staff members are established; and where strong ties are built between home and school. |
| Essential Duties |
- Consults and cooperates with all school personnel and Head Start component staff (i.e., psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers, Head Start Director, Education Coordinator, social services/parent involvement, and specialists) in assessing the academic, mental and emotional health of children and their families, and in developing appropriate lesson plans for school success.
- Provides developmentally appropriate learning experiences in language arts, physical education, art, music, health, and other areas suited to the needs of young children.
- Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of children with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities.
- Develops in each child an awareness of his/her worth as an individual and his role in his family and community. Encourages children to express themselves creatively in art, music and dramatic play.
- Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of children in communication skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of satisfactory self-concepts based on formal and informal assessments.
- Enriches the educational program through study trips to community resources such as museums, parks, etc., and through classroom visits by resource persons from the school and community. Shares and interprets these experiences with children and families.
- Plans and coordinates the work of assistants, family members and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips in order to obtain the maximum benefit from their efforts.
- Develops activities for families which promote family participation and involvement in education activities provided for their children.
- Communicates regularly with parents or family members by means of parent meetings, home visits and individual parent conferences. Interprets school program to families in order to strengthen parental understanding of the individual child's needs and the school's role in the individual child's life.
- Provides appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable school behavior, attitudes and social skills.
- Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of children's work.
- Plans and coordinates with Pre K-2 staff members and Head Start component staff to ensure continuity in services to children.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the project and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Selects and requisitions developmentally appropriate books, instructional materials, instructional supplies in compliance with N.C. Day Care regulations and Head Start performance standards.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as required.
- Participates in faculty committees, team meetings and in on-going evaluation activities.
- Participates in the development and administration of evaluative instruments as required by the program and funding source.
- Other duties as required.

| Education/Experience Requirements |
- Holds or is eligible to hold a N.C. teaching license in Pre-K-6 or Birth-K
- Bachelor's Degree required
- Master's degree in early childhood education, child development preferred
- Prior teaching experience preferred
