POSITION OVERVIEW
The Underwriting Team Lead is the operational leader of Evernest’s Underwriting function, reporting directly to the Director of Leasing and serving as a strategic partner in driving portfolio performance. This role shares responsibility with Leasing leadership to ensure disciplined risk management, strong approval quality, and optimized conversion outcomes that support sustainable company growth.
Success begins with the team. The Team Lead recruits, develops, and coaches high-performing underwriting professionals who embody accountability, analytical rigor, and urgency. Through structured 1:1s, quarterly performance reviews, KPI management, and continuous feedback, they build a culture rooted in ownership, precision, and measurable results.
Underwriting performance directly impacts approval rates, signed lease conversions, and delinquency outcomes. In partnership with the Director of Leasing, the Team Lead sets quarterly goals, monitors performance through Weekly and Quarterly Business Reviews, and translates data into clear operational strategy. They ensure underwriting standards protect asset performance while enabling leasing velocity.
This is not a passive management role. The Underwriting Team Lead is hands-on in daily operations, vendor oversight, and cross-functional alignment with Leasing, Resident Services, and the Call Center. They model extreme ownership, data-driven decision-making, and decisive leadership — strengthening underwriting discipline while advancing Evernest’s growth objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee day-to-day department operations, ensuring alignment with company objectives and achievement of both individual and team KPIs.
- Monitor and drive performance metrics including approval rates, signed lease conversion rates, and preventative delinquency management.
- Continuously identify process improvement opportunities to enhance department efficiency and application outcome ratios.
- Perform data analysis on application outcomes from application account creation to application outcomes and delinquency. Utilize these learnings to make strategic adjustments to screening policy with the ultimate goal of achieving more approved applications while balancing delinquency risk.
- Prepare and present Weekly Business Reviews (WBRs) and Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) to senior leadership, providing data-driven insights and strategic recommendations.
- Conduct regular 1:1 meetings and quarterly performance evaluations to support employee development, accountability, and engagement.
- Lead departmental meetings and cross-functional department meetings to drive execution, resolve issues, and maintain operational alignment.
- Establish quarterly departmental goals and execute strategic initiatives to improve operational efficiency and underwriting outcomes.
- Manage and maintain vendor relationships, ensuring service quality, issue resolution, and alignment with business objectives.
- Contribute to the Team Lead role in a consistently curious mindset. Consume new information, ideas, and engage with peers in the space.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Embrace a high degree of ownership and flexibility in executing evolving responsibilities.
