We are seeking a FinOps Engineer II to support the ongoing optimisation, governance, and financial management of our cloud platforms, with a primary focus on AWS. This role sits at the intersection of cloud engineering, automation, financial accountability, and stakeholder engagement.
The successful candidate will work closely with Cloud Engineering, Application Teams, Architecture, Finance, Procurement, and Business stakeholders to improve cloud cost transparency, drive optimisation opportunities, support forecasting, and embed FinOps practices into day-to-day engineering processes.
This is a hands-on technical role requiring strong AWS knowledge, automation skills, analytical capability, and the ability to translate cloud usage and cost data into meaningful recommendations and business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
AWS Cost Optimisation
Identify and implement AWS cost optimisation opportunities across compute, storage, networking, databases, containers, and serverless services.
Drive rightsizing, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, storage lifecycle, and data transfer optimisation initiatives.
Analyse cloud consumption patterns and cost drivers to identify savings opportunities.
Partner with engineering teams to implement and track realised savings.
Develop repeatable optimisation frameworks, standards, and best practices.
FinOps Engineering & Automation
Build automation, tooling, dashboards, and self-service capabilities that improve FinOps effectiveness.
Automate optimisation identification, tagging compliance, utilisation analysis, and anomaly investigation.
Leverage Python, Infrastructure as Code, AWS services, APIs, and AI-assisted tooling such as GitHub Copilot.
Improve FinOps reporting, data quality, and operational scalability.
Support AWS-native cost management tools and platforms such as Apptio Cloudability.
Architecture & Advisory
Review AWS workloads and recommend improvements balancing cost, performance, resilience, and security.
Support cloud migrations, modernisation initiatives, budgeting, forecasting, and cost modelling.
Promote cost-aware engineering practices and architecture decisions.
Cost Visibility & Governance
Improve tagging quality, cost allocation accuracy, and cloud financial transparency.
Support show back and chargeback reporting.
Develop dashboards, KPIs, and reporting for engineering and business stakeholders.
Investigate cost anomalies and recommend corrective actions.
Stakeholder Engagement
Present optimisation opportunities and business value to technical and non-technical audiences.
Mentor team members and promote FinOps best practices across engineering teams.
Partner with Finance, Procurement, Architecture, and Engineering to support informed cloud investment decisions.
Required Experience
Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Finance Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
Strong experience in Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, DevOps, Infrastructure Engineering, or similar roles.
Hands-on AWS experience with proven cloud cost optimisation expertise.
Experience with FinOps, cloud financial management, governance, and cost allocation practices.
Strong knowledge of AWS pricing models, billing structures, and cloud consumption analytics.
Experience implementing Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, rightsizing, and optimisation initiatives.
Experience with AWS Cost Explorer, Cost & Usage Reports (CUR), Budgets, and Billing & Cost Management.
Strong scripting and automation skills using Python, PowerShell, TypeScript, or similar.
Hands-on experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or OpenTofu.
Excellent analytical, stakeholder management, and communication skills.

Experience with AWS Cost Optimisation Hub, Trusted Advisor, Athena, and QuickSight.
Experience with GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted automation.
Experience supporting cloud migration, modernisation, or data centre exit programmes.
Familiarity with CI/CD, Kubernetes, observability tools, and Agile delivery methodologies.
