Job Description
Job Summary
Our firm is looking for a creative, talented interior designer to design beautiful, functional spaces for commercial and residential clients. The ideal candidate for our interior designer position is a team player who is effective at collaborating with colleagues and partners but is also self-motivated and able to complete work to deadlines with minimal supervision. A visual portfolio of past projects is a definite plus for the interior designer candidate.
Responsibilities:
- Find opportunities for new projects and bid on potential jobs
- Work closely with the client to determine his or her goals and requirements for the project
- Study the space (or the blueprints and plans for the space) to consider use and flow of people through and within the space
- Collaborate with architects, builders, mechanical and structural engineers, and other members of the project team to create and implement a design plan
- Create preliminary design schemes, either by hand-sketching or computer-aided design (CAD)
- Delineate project specifications including materials and furnishings to be used, such as flooring, furniture, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and wall finishes
- Ensure that interior design plans comply with building codes and inspection regulations
- Finalize plans using CAD applications to varying degrees of detail as required by the project, including design plans, floor plans, electrical layouts, and information needed for building permits
- Develop a project timeline and estimates for project costs
- Obtain client approval for interior design plan and cost estimate
- Place orders for all supplies and materials
- Oversee installation of the design elements
- Debrief with client after project completion to ensure that goals were met and the project was done to the customer’s satisfaction
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Superior artistic and creative ability
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and an aptitude for visualization
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate a vision to non-design-oriented people
- Passing score on state-approved interior design exam is required; comparable work experience in the interior design field may suffice
- National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam
- California Council for Interior Design Qualification (CCIDQ) exam
- Bachelor’s degree in interior design, architecture, or related field strongly preferred
- Certification in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) preferred
- A proven history of sustainable interior design work is a plus
- Certification in an interior design specialty—such as lighting design, universal design, or kitchen and bath design—is preferred, but not required
- Portfolio showcasing specialized design services is a plus
