Position Description


The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a Project Director to join the Lumwana Expansion Project Owners Team. The role will be responsible to provide effective project management for the execution of the project. The position will report directly to the Vice President Engineering and Projects – AME & LATAM.
 

The Lumwana Expansion Project involves a ramp-up of existing mining production from 150 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 350 Mtpa, which is in progress. It also involves the expansion of the processing plant throughput from 27 Mtpa to 52 Mtpa with peak design capacity of 54 Mtpa. Construction of the Expansion Project has commenced and is planned for completion in 2028. The Project Director is expected to execute the entire scope of the project, both owner and EPCM managed scope portions, specifically including:

  • Process plant expansion and associated operational readiness activities
  • Expansion to existing maintenance workshops, and mine ancillary infrastructure
  • Expansion of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) and water management infrastructure
  • Expansion of the mining fleet
  • Expansion of existing mine accommodation
  • Development of employee town, Industrial Supplier Park (ISP), and Airport
  • Implementation of the Resettlement Action Plan

 

You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to execute the project alongside our world class people. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine and Project Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
 

Responsibilities

  • Actively contribute to the region’s ‘Journey to Zero’. 
  • Critical leadership role, interfacing between Barrick ExCo, Owners Team, site and relevant stakeholders to the Lumwana Expansion Project. 
  • Accountable for the safe, on budget and on schedule delivery of the Lumwana Expansion Project Project, critically managing all aspects of the Project, including technical, economic, financial, legal, political, social and environmental.
  • Continue to build an appropriately skilled and capable Project Team to deliver the various stages of the Project lifecycle. 
  • Develop and own the relationship with the designated EPCM, overseeing the interface with the Project / Construction Team. 
  • Ensure the Project has appropriate cost control mechanisms and structures in place as well as appropriate feedback processes to manage the project.
  • Proactive identification of Project risks and the implementation of effective strategies to mitigate these. 
  • Provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting of team performance and progress to plan, and presentation of results to management / ExCo. 
  • Set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold them accountable for achieving these; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives. 
  • Accountable for ensuring succession planning activities are proactively managed, with development plans in place for individuals to assume critical positions within the team. 
  • Maintain continuous interaction with the operational team, including the site General Manager, to ensure that we maintain alignment to the integrated project team strategy, as well as honouring the Feasibility Study objectives.
  • Manage large multi-disciplinary teams, inclusive of construction contractors, involved in the execution of the project.
  • Legal, Audit, Governance and SHEQ Compliance.
  • Present regular progress updates to senior management, including corporate. These updates will include project progress on design, execution, associated budgets and schedule progress.
  • Managing the EPCM contract and ensuring timely and accurate delivery of EPCM deliverables.


Qualification requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering field.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

 

Experience and competencies needed

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the mining or similar industry with a focus on project execution.
  • 5+ years project management experience.
  • Previous experience managing large capital projects USD$500M+
  • Computer Skills – must have strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook). 
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to be adaptable, fluid and work in undefined areas in order to get the job done.
