Job Description

Summer Apprentice (Engineering & Facilities) – Batesville, IN

Position Overview

Baxter is seeking a motivated and hands-on Summer Apprentice (Engineering & Facilities) to support our operations at the Batesville site. This is a fixed-term summer co-op opportunity running June 15 through August 28, 2026, reporting to Romain Candelot, Engineering & Facilities Leader.

This role offers exposure to manufacturing operations, maintenance systems, and process engineering, providing meaningful, real-world experience in a regulated medical device environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support maintenance and facilities engineering activities, including completion of work orders and equipment support tasks

  • Assist in tool room operations, including fixture support and tool maintenance activities

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across fabrication and welding processes

  • Participate in process engineering support, including shadowing engineers to improve efficiency and manufacturability

  • Gain exposure to digital systems and automation technologies, including foundational concepts in PLCs and digital workflows

  • Support efforts to improve operational processes, including movement toward paperless work order systems

  • Follow all safety, compliance, and quality standards required in a manufacturing environment

Program Structure

This apprenticeship includes rotational assignments across key operational areas to build foundational engineering experience:

  • Maintenance / Facilities Engineering – Equipment maintenance and facility improvement projects

  • Tool Room Operations – Tool & die maintenance and fixture support

  • Fabrication & Weld Operations – Process optimization, quality, and waste reduction

Each rotation is supported by site leaders and includes defined learning objectives and deliverables. 

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the program, the apprentice will:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of engineering within a manufacturing environment

  • Gain practical experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and process improvement

  • Demonstrate ability to contribute to small-scale continuous improvement projects

  • Build working knowledge of maintenance processes, tooling systems, and production operations 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Strong interest in manufacturing, operations, or facilities engineering

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and willingness to learn

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with engineering principles

Preferred:

  • Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on technical experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment

  • Exposure to process improvement, automation, or fabrication processes

Work Environment

  • Location: Batesville, Indiana (Ritter Plant)

  • Schedule: Full-time, on-site, first shift

  • Duration: June 15 – August 28, 2026
