Job Description
Job Description
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to Dr. Aniruddh Vashisth, the Research Scientist/Engineer 2 supports multiple research projects focused on: (1) developing novel vitrimer formulations and chemistries; (2) examining RF-enabled manufacturing and synthesis; and (3) investigating the structure-property-processing relationships of sustainable polymer systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Experimental Research and Materials Characterization (50%)
- Design, plan, and conduct experiments on vitrimer synthesis, fiber-reinforced composite fabrication, and RF-enabled manufacturing processes, including sample preparation, thermal and mechanical testing, and spectroscopic characterization (FTIR, DMA, DSC, TGA, SEM, XRD)
- Perform mechanical testing and analyze structure–property relationships in polymer composites and vitrimeric systems
- Develop and optimize recyclable vitrimer formulations
- Collaborative and Team-Based Research (30%)
- Work on collaborative, multidisciplinary research teams spanning mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and computer science, interfacing with internal and external collaborators at partner institutions
- Coordinate with industry sponsors and federal program managers to align research deliverables with project milestones and reporting requirements
- Co-author scientific publications, prepare technical reports, and present findings at national and international conferences
- Data Analysis and Dissemination (15%)
- Analyze experimental data using MATLAB, Python, and statistical methods; synthesize results into major scientific findings and maintain detailed records of experimental procedures and results
- Write and contribute to peer-reviewed journal publications, conference proceedings, and technical reports
- Lab Operations and Equipment Maintenance (5%)
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure compliance with safety regulations, manage inventory of materials and consumables, and support routine lab operations
Required Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Chemistry or related field.
- Two years of relevant experience in polymer chemistry and/or mechanics of materials.
- Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.
Additional Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in polymer chemistry and/or mechanics of materials, with specific knowledge of synthesis, characterization, and processing.
- Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques including FTIR, DMA, DSC, TGA, SEM, and mechanical testing.
- Proficiency in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific computing using MATLAB, Python, or equivalent tools.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and equipment maintenance procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with vitrimer-based recyclable composites, including fiber-reinforced vitrimer systems and bond exchange chemistry.
- Knowledge of radio frequency (RF) heating processes and electromagnetic-assisted manufacturing techniques.
- Familiarity with ultrasonic welding, composite joining, or advanced composite manufacturing techniques.
Visa Sponsorship
This recruitment is open to applicants who will require employer sponsorship for an H-1B or E-3 visa.
