Description of Work

The Conservation Technician works under the general supervision of the Archives Conservator. The Conservation Technician is responsible for performing a variety of basic treatments on archival material and participates in a wide range of preservation activities to optimize the long-term care of the State Archives of North Carolina collections. Treatments may include surface cleaning, remediation, humidification, flattening, de-acidification, mending, and stabilizing materials to be digitized. The Conservation Technician also assists in creating custom housings for archival materials and assists in preparing and stabilizing materials for exhibitions and loans. This includes constructing protective enclosures, creating proper exhibit supports, and assisting with installation/ de-installation of exhibits. The Conservation Technician will also participate in preservation projects, inventories, and collection surveys to determine conservation or preservation needs for collections, as well as engage in environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, and disaster response initiatives as needed.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Perform basic treatments on collection material under the supervision of the Archives’ Conservator.
• Create custom housing for collection material.
• Assist in exhibit preparation as instructed, building custom displays, supports, etc., and assist in installation/deinstallation of exhibitions as needed.
• Participate in collections surveys and condition assessments as needed.
• Assist the Lead Conservation Technician with the collection of environmental data, integrated pest management, and other preservation-centric initiatives.

Recruitment Range: $31,084 - $42,740

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Prior experience working with rare or valuable book and paper artifacts or museum objects and knowledge of current conservation and preservation standards, practices, and ethics.  
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity and experience handling fragile or deteriorating library or archival materials.
  • Familiarity with general conservation laboratory procedures and ability to safely use standard conservation laboratory equipment.
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to chemicals, dust, and mold is possible.
  • Ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and maintain effective working relationships with other agency staff, government officials, and the public.

Position/Physical Requirements

Monday - Friday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m.

  •  Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs. and can unpack, shelve, and shift large quantities of archival materials.
  • The employee may be required to stand for long periods of time when performing conservation treatments.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

and

one year of experience in museum related work in area of assignment

Section/Unit Description

The Collections Management Branch of the Division of Archives and Records is responsible for a wide variety of conservation, preservation, imaging, and photographic functions. Among its responsibilities are creation of security microfilm of public records for state, local and municipal agencies; protection of the State Archives security microfilm holdings in its security vault; photographic and microfilm duplication services; conservation treatment of documentary material; preservation reformatting of collections; digital imaging projects; photography services; and quality control testing and documentation. Under the mandated authority of NCGS §132 and §121, the Division of Archives and Records, through the Collections Management Branch, provides certain archival and records management services for public officials and the citizens of the state including duplication of records upon request, preservation reformatting of public records, and provision for storage of security microfilm. The Collections Management Branch maintains a conservation lab for treatment of the documentary materials in the custody of the State Archives of North Carolina. Staff in the lab work as part of the comprehensive preservation management program of the State Archives. This program includes assessment, treatment, and consultation activities involving unique documentary materials in a variety of formats.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
