Legal Counsel - Office with Flex (60/40 Office/Home) in Spain

The Legal Counsel will support and advise ICON with all aspects of legal relationships on Investigator contracts, as requested by ICON Project Managers (PM), ICON project team and/or Sponsor. Will provide commercially focused, concise, actionable legal advice to business stakeholders on a broad range of legal issues including in relation to contract, tort, corporate, data protection, litigation, and compliance. They will play a key role along with the rest of the legal team in optimizing team processes and procedures, improving standard templates and gathering and maintaining the latest team knowhow. 

The role is Office Hybrid (60% office-based) in Madrid or Barcelona, Spain.

What will you be doing:

  • Oversee and advise the legal response for Investigator contracts

  • Support the legal team and advise on contract language

  • Act as Consultant on Investigator Contracts, as requested by ICON Project Managers (PM), ICON project team and/or Sponsor

  • Coordinate team meetings

  • Assign tasks to team members as requested by ICON PM, ICON project team and/or Sponsor

  • Review and develop Clinical Investigator Agreements

  • Assist with reviewing Investigator site Master Service Agreements (MSAs) or other MSAs as appropriate

  • Liaise with the patient recruitment group, finance and any other relevant departments/regions within ICON

  • Assess and manage local country-specific legal vendor network

  • Liaise with project managers and offer support to PMs/study teams

  • Provide status reports as required

  • Attend bid defense meetings as appropriate

  • Provide training on an ongoing basis regarding Investigator contracts

  • Develop appropriate processes and procedures

  • Develop and maintain ICON's standard investigator template

  • Consult with Project Managers, Sponsor project leaders and other appropriate personnel on:

    • Contract language and budget development and negotiations

    • Special site requests outside of established parameters

    • All other pertinent information toward the execution of contract-related documents for a given study

  • Maintain open and professional communication with ICON employees to assist in finalizing study Agreements

  • Travel (approximately 10%) domestic and/or international

  • Any other tasks as appropriate

Your profile:   


•    Qualified lawyer with 2-5 years in contract negotiations, preferably in an in-house role (within the Pharmaceutical/CRO/Biotech/Medical Device industry or a multi-national organization) or a leading commercial/civil law firm. Previous experience in commercial/business law and/or commercial contracts essential (in a commercial law firm or a leading multinational);
•    Ability to independently evaluate complex legal issues and to provide commercially focused pragmatic solutions in simple language to the business, both orally and in writing;
•    Ability to synthesize large volumes of information and present concise commercial conclusions and recommendations to business stakeholders at all levels tactfully.
•    Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess potential for risk and opportunity;
•    Proven team player with demonstrated teamwork, analytical and consultation skills;
•    Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships across  business functions across varying levels of seniority;
•    Strong influencing style, articulate and confident;
•    Self-starter with the ability to work under their own initiative with a very strong work ethic;
•    Excellent attention to detail with excellent drafting skills;
•    Demonstrate ability to work under pressure and/or tight timelines in a fluid/fast-paced, highly collaborative, team environment;
•    Very strong working knowledge of PC Applications (Excel, Microsoft Word, Windows, etc.).
