Job Requirements

I. General Summary 

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Medical Oncology & Hematology Inpatient Service provides comprehensive care for hospitalized oncology patients in collaboration with medical oncologists and the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The APP is responsible for evaluating oncology and hematology consults, managing hospitalized oncology patients, and coordinating care across inpatient services. 

The APP plays a critical role in supporting the oncology and hematology consult service by evaluating new consult requests, following established oncology patients during hospitalization, and providing education to patients and families regarding cancer diagnosis, treatment plans, and supportive care needs. 

The APP practices within the scope of professional licensure, national certification, institutional credentialing, and delineation of privileges in accordance with applicable state regulations and hospital policies. 

 

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks 

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of responsibilities. 

Inpatient Clinical Care 

Performs comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of hospitalized oncology and hematology patients in collaboration with medical oncologists.

Evaluates new inpatient oncology and hematology consultations requested by hospital services or the emergency department.

Conducts follow-up evaluations for oncology patients during hospitalization and adjusts treatment plans as appropriate.

Orders and interprets laboratory tests, imaging studies, and diagnostic evaluations to support patient management.

Assists with management of cancer-related complications including treatment toxicities, infection risk, cytopenias, and symptom control.

 

Patient and Family Education 

Provides patient and family education regarding cancer diagnoses, treatment plans, supportive care needs, and discharge planning.

Assists patients and families in understanding treatment options, expected outcomes, and supportive care resources.

 

Care Coordination 

Collaborates with oncologists, hospitalists, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, and other specialists to ensure coordinated patient care.

Coordinates care transitions including discharge planning, outpatient oncology and hematology follow-up, and referral to supportive services.

Facilitates communication between inpatient teams and outpatient oncology providers to support continuity of care.

 

Documentation and Quality 

Maintains timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record.

Participates in oncology and hematology quality initiatives and adherence to evidence-based cancer care guidelines.



Work Experience

Education and Experience 

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

Current and unrestricted state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Current national certification through an approved certifying body (ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Prior experience in oncology, hematology/oncology, internal medicine, or hospital medicine preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Knowledge of oncologic disease processes and cancer treatment modalities.

Ability to evaluate and manage complex oncology and hematology patients in the inpatient setting.

Ability to recognize and manage treatment-related toxicities and complications.

Strong patient and family communication skills during complex and emotionally challenging situations.

Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary oncology teams.

Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation and regulatory compliance.
