Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager and Assistant Aquatics Manager, junior lifeguards are responsible for the constant safety and well-being of all patrons at all times, with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water as well as responsible for the supervision of swimmers and spectators, enforcement of safety protocols, and providing a fun and enjoyable environment for all. Must be able to identify life-threatening situations and act in a level-headed and appropriate manner during all emergencies.
ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities for this position. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Aquatics Manager and Assistant Aquatics Manager.
• Enforcing pool rules/regulations and protecting lives.
• Guarding and observing the shallow pool areas such as activity pools, splash pads and slides to ensure appropriate use by patrons. Rescuing patrons in distress as needed.
• Answers inquiries from patrons.
• Performs custodial and/or janitorial tasks to maintain a clean facility area.
• Administering First Aid and/or CPR as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness of pool, pool deck, pool equipment, locker rooms, showers, and common areas at all times.
• Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
• Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
• All other duties as assigned and appropriate.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the city to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, swim, squat, kneel, use hand to finger dexterity, feel or operate objects, reach above shoulders, reach below shoulders, lift up to 50 lbs., lift from floor, and lift bulky items.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate a computer and other equipment, as needed.
- Occasionally the employee will run, climb, crawl, and lift over 50 lbs.
- Must have 20/40 uncorrected vision in each eye.
- Hearing must be within normal range to be able to hear adults and children in life and/or health and safety endangering situations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Must be 16 years old or older at time of application.
• Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.
• Ability to positively interact with the general public.
• Must have knowledge of life saving and first aid methods and techniques.
• Must know how to operate modern life saving equipment.
• Must have current and valid lifeguard/first aid certificate and CPR/AED certificate OR obtain said certificates within 90 days of hire.
• Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate (optional/recommended).
• Swimming proficiency as it pertains to the standards and training of the American Red Cross.
