Responsibilities

The Utilities Automation Engineer will join the Utilities, Facilities, and Project Engineering team as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) in establishing the maintenance and reliability strategy and being directly accountable for utilities / facilities automation machine controls, integrations, and data at the Lilly Kenosha County (LKC) campus.  This position supports maintenance and optimization of the utilities / facilities automation machine controls, integrations, and data across the LKC campus which include utilities / facilities Automation Systems (BMS, EMS, QBMS, Clean Utility) for HVAC (GMP and Non-GMP) and Utilities systems, both GMP (PW, WFI, Clean Steam, Process Compressed Air, etc.) and non-GMP (Plant Steam, Chilled Water, Water, Waste Neutralization, Sewer, etc.) and the ancillary systems controls and devices associated within their facilities.  This is a hands-on role where the engineer may be required to perform troubleshooting of automation machine controls, root cause analysis, and component and system analyses to identify utilities / facilities automation machine controls improvements and reduce risks, design modifications, and /or various utilities / facilities automation machine controls improvement strategies on the GMP and Non-GMP assets and the ancillary systems controls and devices associated within their facilities.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

  • Be the SME with a deep technical expertise in all systems under scoped responsibility (GMP and non-GMP HVAC, GMP and non-GMP Utilities and ancillary systems controls and devices associated within their facilities), understanding their applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing, understanding flow charts and process parameters, and awareness of industry trends.
  • Responsible for utilities / facilities automation (QBMS, Clean Utility, and Door Control) hardware and software maintenance in Utilities Engineering, including procedure establishment, quality and HSE requirement compliance, troubleshooting, PM, routine monitoring, and deviation investigations and prevention.
  • Ensure the assigned processes are in alignment with Industry and Lilly Standards.
  • Support risk assessment exercises using the different tools available (e.g., FMEA).
  • Participate as required in teams, committees, or other groups and/or individually to achieve the departmental, site, and/or company goals.
  • Monitor utility systems and their respective controls and devices, and maintain KPI’s to assure that they are operating properly, in compliance with requirements.
  • Provide written instructions for the proper way to operate and maintain the equipment and process to assure that the system operates within the controlled parameters.
  • Implement efficient and effective maintenance and reliability techniques.
  • Apply problem solving skills by leading equipment failures troubleshooting, demonstrating RCA lead investigator proficiency, and guide operations personnel in the resolution of process issues.
  • Provide customer consultation and notifications on issues that involve utilities areas assigned.
  • Assure that all necessary items are identified on the proper tracking systems and make sure that items are completed by the required date.
  • Provide technical assistance as necessary to maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Support internal and external inspections and investigations (including Quality and HSE).
  • Maintain efficient communications with appropriate site customer groups.
  • Proficiency with the QMS CAPA systems (e.g., TrackWise, Veeva).
  • Capable of data mining, data analysis, process monitoring, and lead process control tuning parameters.
  • Assure that there is adequate site generation and distribution capacity by monitoring the site usage and staying abreast of future site requirements.  This includes providing information for the site utilities master plan and reviewing the information provided by the customers as to their current and future demands.
  • Consult on technical issues with operators, responsible engineers, and crafts.
  • Maintain, develop, and conduct operations training of utility systems automation controls.
  • Utilize statistical analysis tools to determine the process control, and capability for investigations.
  • Comply with and support departmental HSE plans.
  • Ensure the systems comply with all Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures, and knowledge of Process Safety Management processes. (i.e., PSSR, GIPSM, CPH, etc.).
  • Technical resource during process hazard reviews.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Review meetings and/or Safety Teams as required by leadership.
  • Identify risks and escalate situation with a sense of urgency.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: minimum educational requirement to perform the position:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or field closely related to robotic engineering, automation engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: minimum specific experience required to perform the position:
  • Demonstrated office software skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, UMS, data historian) and collaboration sites.
  • Knowledge of cGMP.
  • Experience in automation machine controls, process control, Building Automation System, Environmental Monitoring System, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Siemens Desigo CC, Honeywell, Rockwell Automation Systems, and be able to program compilation, understand the architecture of PLCs, DDC, and handle related software / hardware failures.
  • Familiarity with on-site instruments, such as flow, temperature, pressure, control valves, and other utilities, and be able to handle related faults.
  • Demonstrated high level of understanding of engineering concepts, 1st principles, and engineering functional standards.
  • Technical understanding of HVAC, Utilities, and Facilities controls, integration, and data.

Additional Skills/ Preferences

  • Previous start up experience;
  • Automation Engineering experience in the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Previous equipment commissioning experience;
  • Automation Engineering experience with manufacturing plant utilities;
  • Project management experience;
  • Experience with maintenance and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS);
  • Previous experience with deviation and change management systems including Veeva;
  • CAP, RPA, or TAE would be beneficial.

Additional Information

  • Good organization skills;
  • Availability to work irregular hours, weekends, and/or holidays when necessary;
  • Availability to provide on call support during weekends and after working hours;
  • General work to be performed in building’s interior with normal temperature, air condition, good illumination, clean areas and minimal hazard.  Work duties and responsibilities will involve occasional visits to exterior areas, and include high elevations, use of stairs, cold room environments, etc.  Frequently enter locations where there is exposure to gases, background noise, dust, chemicals, etc.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$66,000 - $171,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
