We’re building tomorrow’s fleet today
With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve  designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades. Think that’s cool? Keep reading:

The Role

Shape the Details. Shape the Ship. Become a Sheetmetal Mechanic

As an Ingalls Sheetmetal Mechanic, you’ll help build the systems that keep America’s most advanced naval vessels moving, ventilated, and mission‑ready. From ductwork to engine exhaust systems, your craftsmanship ensures precision, performance, and reliability across the ship.

If you’re ready to apply your sheetmetal skills to work that truly matters, a rewarding career at Ingalls Shipbuilding — “America’s Shipyard” and Mississippi’s largest private employer — is waiting for you.

What You Can Earn
Earn up to $35.99 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
• Opportunities for overtime and long‑term advancement.

What You’ll Do
• Fabricate and install a wide range of sheet metal components, including:
– Ductwork
– Ventilation systems
– Main engine exhaust assemblies
– Metal containers and housings
– Instrumentation panels
• Plan, lay out, and execute work using shop math, blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
• Use cutting, forming, and fastening tools to achieve precise, high‑quality installations.
• Work in an active shipyard environment that may involve varying conditions, heights, and confined spaces.
• Maintain safety practices that meet — and often exceed — industry standards.

Why This Work Matters
Every system you fabricate contributes to ships that support and defend our nation. Ingalls has built nearly 70% of the U.S. Navy’s fleet — and skilled Sheetmetal Mechanics are essential to that legacy.

What You Bring
• Proven experience in sheet metal fabrication and installation
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
• Strong shop math and layout skills
• Commitment to safety, precision, and teamwork

Must Have

Requires a minimum of four (4) years of sheetmetal experience or related craft experience in joiner, shipfitting, and/or carpentry.

Nice to Have

Prefer candidates with the ability to set up and operate a variety of sheetmetal machines such as brakes and shears, pass a skill assessment test, ability to read marine blueprints, and work from standard and metric specifications.
