The Department Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Three-Piece Department. This role involves managing staff, optimizing processes, and ensuring the departmental goals align with the overall objectives of the company.
What you'll be doing:
Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.
Supports and follows the SQF (Safe Quality Food) guidelines of the food safety system.
Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure work environment. This includes correcting unsafe acts/conditions, participating in monthly safety meetings, performing monthly safety inspections, and investigating accidents, as required.
Follows company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), practices and Sonoco’s Global Code of Conduct.
Directs and coordinates the activities of the production function in the Three-Piece Department to ensure safety, quality, inventory, productivity, and housekeeping standards are met.
Establishes and implements improvements for cost reduction, quality, and safety programs.
Develops and manages the department budget, ensuring cost effective operations and adherence to financial targets.
Directs and assists with developmental or experimental production activities.
Manages and coaches plant supervisors, working closely with other departments to ensure seamless operations.
Responsible for housekeeping within the department.
Reviews performance appraisals and progression increases for hourly personnel.
Performs administration activities including development of employees, salary administration, budget administration, employee safety, meeting objectives, planning, organizing, integrating, and measuring the work performed within the department.
Maintains awareness and complies with hazardous waste management and other environmental management requirements in the workplace.
Understands, completes, and maintains environmental documentation for which the individual is trained, or as directed by the Emergency Commander or Emergency Manager (i.e. inspections, labeling, record keeping, maintenance of equipment, etc.)
Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation, through prudent use of materials, proper disposal and segregation as directed during the training or by the Emergency Commander. Understands and practices proper accumulation and storage requirements of wastes.
Responsible for coordinating and supporting continuing improvement initiatives within the department.
This position is in our Chestnut Hill, TN facility.

Broad training in a related field usually acquired through a Bachelor of Science or through equivalent work experience.
BS in mechanical/manufacturing/industrial engineering
4+ years of job-related experience in a manufacturing environment
Working Knowledge of the following areas:
Production principles, practices, nomenclature, and procedures.
Generally accepted managerial practices and procedures
Business principles, legal practices, customer needs, and expectations.
Assigned equipment
Must be able to handle sensitive related and proprietary information in a confidential manner.
Ability to negotiate with customers to promote or sell ideas or concepts.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines while paying attention to detail
Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data in order to make recommendations.
Ability to wear appropriate safety glasses, hearing protection, clothing, and footwear in appropriate areas and follow safety practices.
Compensation:
The annual base salary range for this role is from $XX to $YY, plus an annual target bonus of ZZ% of base salary.
