Job Description

The Corporate Controller is responsible for leading the Company's accounting operations and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial information. Reporting to the Managing Director – Accounting & Finance, IT, and Supply Chain, this position oversees general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury operations, internal controls, and financial systems while supporting the Company's strategic and operational objectives.

Essential Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Lead and direct all accounting operations, including general ledger, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, lease accounting, payroll accounting, treasury accounting, and intercompany accounting.
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, ensuring accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting packages for executive leadership, lenders, shareholders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure accurate accounting and reporting for complex transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, escrows, leases, revenue recognition, intercompany transactions, and other technical accounting matters.
  • Oversee the preparation, review, and reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and ensure timely resolution of reconciling items.
  • Review and analyze monthly operating results, key performance indicators, and budget-to-actual variances, providing meaningful financial insight and recommendations.

Financial Planning, Budgeting & Treasury

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, quarterly forecasting process, and long-range financial planning activities in partnership with operational leadership.
  • Partner with executive leadership to analyze financial performance, identify business risks and opportunities, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Oversee cash management, liquidity forecasting, working capital management, and treasury-related activities.
  • Support financing initiatives, capital planning, and financial modeling as required.

Internal Controls, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Establish, maintain, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and Company standards.
  • Direct the Company's internal control environment, including control design, documentation, implementation, monitoring, and remediation of identified deficiencies.
  • Serve as the primary accounting lead for external audits, lender examinations, tax-related inquiries, and other financial compliance reviews.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and internal stakeholders to support income tax, sales and use tax, property tax, ad-valorem tax, fuel and fuel excise tax, shareholder reporting, and other regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of accounting position papers, technical accounting memorandums, and supporting documentation for significant accounting conclusions.
  • Ensure adequate documentation of accounting policies, procedures, controls, and key financial processes.

Systems, Process Improvement & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Lead the implementation, enhancement, and optimization of financial systems, reporting tools, and ERP technologies to improve efficiency, reporting capabilities, and scalability.
  • Evaluate accounting processes and organizational structures to identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives impacting financial reporting, accounting operations, business processes, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Promote best practices that strengthen financial controls, operational efficiency, and decision-making capabilities.

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop the accounting organization while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Establish departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with Company objectives.
  • Drive accountability for month-end close deliverables, financial reporting deadlines, and departmental performance.
  • Develop succession plans and professional development opportunities that strengthen organizational capability and support future growth.
  • Foster proactive communication and strong partnerships across all business functions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least six years in a management role.
  • Minimum of three years of public accounting experience required.
  • Experience with publicly traded company reporting or complex GAAP reporting environments.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, technical accounting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management, and internal controls.
  • Experience leading external audits, lender examinations, and financial compliance activities.
  • Experience with ERP systems; ERP implementation experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of S-Corporation accounting, shareholder reporting, and Schedule K-1 reporting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in marine transportation, logistics, industrial, manufacturing, or other asset-intensive industries.
  • Experience implementing accounting process improvements and financial system enhancements.
  • Treasury management experience.
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other complex business transactions.
  • Big Four public accounting experience a plus but not required.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Carry, push, pull or move 10 pounds regularly, or up to 20 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to sit up to 8 hours per day
