Physician Hospitalist OB (Part-time)
Job Description
I. General Summary
Under general direction, this role is an independent licensed provider responsible for diagnosing and treating patients independently and in collaboration with and colleagues. The position provides continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between the healthcare team, the patient, and the patient’s family. This role coordinates care to ensure quality, cost effective care, appropriate length of stay, patient safety, and excellent patient satisfaction. Weekday, weekend, shift work, holiday and on-call may be required.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Participate as a member of the Healthcare team in a coordinated model of care, maintaining an average dayshift caseload of 6-8 patients. Participate as a member of the healthcare team performing cross-coverage. Perform overnight admissions with completion of a history and physical, completing a minimum of 7 admissions per night.
2. Demonstrates competence in clinical assessment and decision making including diagnostic reasoning and problem solving. Performs a comprehensive history and physical for patients admitted to the hospitalist services. Places orders in CPOE, obtains, interprets, and follows-up on appropriate diagnostic tests. Communicates with attending physician on attestation of medical necessity of admission of “inpatient” status patients. Establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment and diagnostic findings. Present his/her patients in the Coordinated Model of Care Model of Care Rounds.
3. Coordinates, documents and orders appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of history and physical and diagnostic results. Facilitates patient flow. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team including case management and social work to ensure appropriate and timely discharge.
4. Initiates protocols/clinical pathways and evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention. Respond to and manages urgent issues.
5. Performs and assists with invasive procedures as credentialed as needed.
6. Collaborates with Hospitalist physicians, specialty physicians and APPs regarding admission, plan of care, discharge and transfer of care, as needed. Communicates plan of care with the interdisciplinary team.
7. Incorporates the patient and family in their healthcare plan; communicates plan of care with the patient and family members. Provides patient and family education related to the plan of care, disease process, new treatment plans and medication regimens. Advocates for patients ensuring patient/ family participation in care, knowledge of treatment options and understand of rights of care.
8. Initiates appropriate referrals and specialty consultations or other agency involvement as needed.
9. Considers the holistic needs of patients and determines appropriate resources (i.e. Pain management, palliative care).
10. Demonstrates ethical decision making incorporating other healthcare team members as appropriate.
11. Uses evidenced based interventions, MEC established clinical guidelines and best practice guidelines in planning patient care. Follows policies, procedures and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
12. Functions as a clinical resource and or preceptor for other team members including but not limited to all hospitalists, APPs, and nurse practitioners and physician assistant students. Participates in educational strategies to assist the APPs to improve clinical outcomes as needed.
13. Serves as interdisciplinary team member focused on improving patient outcomes, safety, quality or cost effectiveness. Participates in developmental of evidence-based practices for a specific population or disease process as needed.
14. Actively participates and attends .80% of all APP staff meetings. Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with all team members.
15. Documents patient care in an accurate and timely fashion in accordance with Medicare and other industry standard guidelines as well as participates in accreditation readiness.
16. Provides superior service to internal and external customers by consistently demonstrating respect, empathy, and confidentiality.
17. Promotes the organizations to all customers. Acts as a loyal, supportive and informed spokesperson for the organization. Promotes the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Group’s values.
18. Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiative. Provide safe patient care through compliance with all regulatory agency recommendations and mandates.
19. Reports adverse events and near misses to through the Event Tracking System and takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
20. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
1. NPI number, DEA and CDS required.
2. BLS required,
3. ACLS required.

1. Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing and/or certification in area of specialty.
2. Ability to demonstrate competency knowledge and skills necessary to provide are appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
3. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population specific and age specific needs.
4. Highly effective verbal communication skills are required to interact with patient, family, department units, medical and nursing staff at all essential matters.
5. Demonstrated/documented effective interpersonal skills.
6. Maintains updated hospital safety and other mandatory training.
7. Maintains updated immunizations as per recommended practice area.
