Job Description

The Center for Faculty Wellbeing and Development seeks a Director of Faculty Mentoring. The Center for Faculty Wellbeing and Development, a unit of the Office of the Provost, provides mentoring support and resources, leadership development programs, coaching for faculty leaders and faculty discerning their career progression, support for faculty search and promotion committees, faculty workload support for faculty affairs leaders across the University, and faculty development programs using applied theater to promote thriving workplaces and classrooms through UVA Acts. In addition, the Center for Faculty Wellbeing and Development serves as a hub for faculty, collaborating with offices across the University such as the Faculty Employee Assistance Program, the Ombuds Office, and the Office of Wisdom and Wellbeing in UVA Health. 

The Director of Faculty Mentoring will report to the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development/Director of the Center for Faculty Wellbeing and Development. The Director will lead and expand current mentoring programs while also collaborating with Deans, Associate Deans, and Department Chairs across the University to develop and support faculty mentoring programs based in evidence-based best practices for mentoring across diverse disciplines and all ranks of faculty. The Director will serve as an expert and consultant for departmental and school leadership as well as directing and leading programs to create a network of effective faculty mentoring across the entire University. They will assess current and future programs rigorously and track the impact of programs across faculty careers.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the University Mentoring Program for new faculty in the first and second years at UVA. This includes: revising the current curriculum to adapt to current and evolving needs and concerns, recruiting, training, and supporting senior faculty mentors (both tenured and AGF) every year, recruiting and supporting junior faculty mentees, organizing and supporting mentoring groups, assessing the program annually, and tracking the impact of the program with alumni and mentors.
  • Direct the Generating External Mentor Support Program for pre-tenure faculty. This includes: recruiting pre-tenure faculty to participate through educational outreach about the benefits of external mentors as part of their mentoring network in working toward tenure at UVA, supporting mentees as they recruit external mentors, approving reimbursements for expenses incurred when meeting with external mentors, and assessing the impact of the program longitudinally with participants.
  • Outreach, collaboration, and consultation with Deans, Associate Deans, and Department Chairs across the University. This includes: educating, supporting, and facilitating best practices in faculty mentoring—developing new programs, providing resources, consulting about current programs and providing training for mentors and mentees for mentoring programs located within specific schools and departments across the University--with the goal of developing a network of consistent best mentoring practices across the University.
  • Collaborate with Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs within the Office of the Provost to determine needs for faculty development in order to mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows effectively and provide faculty development resources and learning opportunities to improve these practices (in partnership with UVA Acts).
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • Experience: At least five years of relevant experience or Master's degree with at least two years of relevant experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Terminal degree in field
  • Experience in a faculty role
  • At least five years in faculty affairs and development, designing and leading faculty mentoring programs
  • Leadership experience collaborating across a complex institution of higher education

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The anticipated hiring range is $80,000–$100,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
