As a Communicable Disease Investigator, you will play an important role in our efforts to reduce the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Maricopa County! We will count on you to conduct case investigations, including identifying and interviewing contacts and providing testing recommendations and education to clients, medical providers, the community, and staff.

We Require
Two years of experience conducting health field investigations, community outreach, and/or case management
Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Medical Technology, Health Sciences, or a health-related field
A combination of post‑secondary education and job‑related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year‑for‑year basis
We Also Value
Experience working as a Communicable Disease Investigator for a local public health department or state health services agency
Experience working with the public, conducting health-related field investigations for communicable diseases
Experience working in a medical field, drawing blood, doing case investigative work, and/or interviewing or counseling clients
Experience working with various socioeconomic groups performing counseling or health education services
Experience working with STIs or epidemiological data related to STIs
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Job Contributions
Conduct confidential field and telephone investigations by researching, identifying, locating, and contacting individuals in Maricopa County who have been diagnosed with, or may have been exposed to, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Notify clients of HIV and STI test results and refer them to appropriate medical providers for diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care to reduce disease transmission and improve health outcomes
Interview individuals diagnosed with HIV or other STIs to obtain epidemiological information, including risk factors, disease history, and potential sources of exposure
Elicit, locate, notify, and interview sexual and other identified contacts of infected individuals to facilitate testing, treatment, and prevention services
Refer clients to appropriate internal and external agencies for medical care, follow-up services, case management, education, prevention, and supportive resources
Conduct follow-up activities with individuals previously diagnosed with HIV to ensure continued engagement in medical care and treatment
Create, maintain, and update case investigation records, documentation, and reports
Conduct community outreach and prevention activities targeting high-risk populations, including client recruitment, registration for testing services, prevention education, specimen collection, and venipuncture
Provide HIV prevention education and care navigation services to clients.
Working Conditions
Position requires extensive fieldwork in diverse communities, including driving to various locations within Maricopa County in a personal or County vehicle, in all weather conditions, walking long distances, climbing stairs, and reacting quickly to potentially unsafe situations
Position may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, respiratory hazards, noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and workspace restrictions
Position requires traveling to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles on County business
Mileage reimbursement is available
Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, and requires sitting, walking, and standing to a significant degree
Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency
Travel may also be required to attend conferences, training, and possibly varying work locations
Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire
Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check
Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
