Job Description

The Role 

We are looking to recruit a Knowledge Management Lawyer to support Freeths Construction & Engineering Department. The department comprises both contentious and non-contentious lawyers, split roughly 50/50, but sits within our Dispute Resolution (“DR”) Division. This is a flexible, part-time role (ideally 3 days a week) which will have a genuine impact on how the team operates. 

Freeths DR Division currently has approximately 180 members of staff, with the Construction & Engineering Department comprising 45 members. 

This is a practical, hands-on role focused on making sure our lawyers have access to the right knowledge, in the right format, at the right time. You will work closely with partners and fee earners to maintain and improve our precedents, keep the team up to date with legal developments, and support how we use technology and AI in practice. 

The role will also support the team’s continued growth, particularly in managing an extensive and complex non-contentious precedent base, supporting with the writing of articles and helping our team respond to increasing client and regulatory demands. 

Key Responsibilities 

Precedents and Know-How 

- Take ownership of the Construction & Engineering precedent bank, including firm precedents and client-specific materials – these are mainly non-contentious (e.g amendments to various standard form contracts, particularly JCT and NEC, consultant appointments, etc)

- Review and update precedents to reflect legal and regulatory changes 

- Work with the team to ensure precedents are used consistently and effectively

 

Legal Updates and Knowledge Sharing 

- Monitor developments in construction law and share clear, practical updates with the team 

- Produce briefings, guidance notes and internal know-how materials 

- Support client updates and external articles 

Training and Development 

- Support the design and delivery of training for lawyers and trainees 

- Help embed best practice in how precedents and knowledge resources are used 

- Contribute to onboarding for new joiners 

Innovation and Technology 

- Work with the Knowledge & Innovation team to improve how knowledge is captured and accessed 

- Support the development of automated documents and workflows 

- Help embed new tools, including AI, into day-to-day work 

General Support to the Team 

- Respond to technical queries and research requests 

- Help prepare materials for client seminars and events 

- Work with colleagues across Risk & Compliance where required

Skills and Experience 

Essential

- Qualified lawyer with experience in non-contentious Construction & Engineering work 

- Strong drafting skills and attention to detail 

- Comfortable working with precedents and technical legal materials 

- Able to explain legal points clearly and practically 

 Desirable

- Previous experience in a knowledge management or PSL role 

- Experience of Legora and CoPilot AI

- Experience of training or mentoring 

- Knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022

 Level

This role would suit an existing Knowledge Management Lawyer or a fee earner (typically 3+ PQE) interested in moving into a knowledge-focused role.
