Eastern Health

Eastern Health is one of Melbourne’s largest public health services. We provide a range of emergency, surgical, medical and general healthcare services and have a proud history of serving a diverse community.

Our Employee Value Proposition is “Being a part of Eastern Health means belonging to a welcoming team of healthcare experts”.

This statement aligns with our promise to our communities, patients, consumers and staff that we will be HEALTHIER TOGETHER. Bolder than a vision for the future, our promise calls us to action. We know that working together is the only way we can achieve what is necessary for a healthier future.

About the role

Ready to step beyond the ward round and gain meaningful surgical experience?

Eastern Health is offering exciting Surgical HMO3+ opportunities commencing February 2027 for junior doctors passionate about pursuing a career in surgery or wanting to update surgical skills.

This rotational stream is designed to provide broad clinical exposure, hands-on learning, and strong mentorship across multiple surgical specialties within a supportive, high-volume training environment.

You will gain hands-on surgical experience across a variety of specialties while working with complex and diverse patient presentations across major health campuses. These roles offer a dynamic balance of theatre exposure, ward-based care, and on-call experience, allowing you to further develop your clinical judgement, procedural confidence, and operative skills in real-world surgical settings.

Eastern Health is recognised for its strong teaching culture and commitment to junior doctor development. You will benefit from structured education programs, mentorship from experienced surgical supervisors and medical education leaders, and opportunities to learn within collaborative multidisciplinary teams. Whether you are committed to a surgical pathway or still refining your long-term interests, this role provides excellent preparation for future surgical training pathways, including SET applications.

These positions require HMOs to independently take full patient histories from multiple sources, perform and document comprehensive examinations, and actively interpret investigations to update and revise management plans. In other words, it assumes not just doing tasks under direction, but making real-time clinical judgments and owning the diagnostic and treatment process.

You will gain experience in patient management and coordination of care—developing treatment plans, prescribing medications safely (including high-risk drugs), and working across multidisciplinary teams while maintaining responsibility for ward prioritisation, handovers, and discharge processes.

Rotations may include:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Plastics
  • Vascular Surgery
  • General Surgery (Metro & Rural)
  • ENT
  • Urology
  • ICU
  • A term of annual leave, relief, and night shifts

The yearly roster is structured into four 13-week terms, providing a clear rotational framework that ensures broad and balanced exposure across surgical specialties throughout the year. This term-based system allows for progressive skill development, regular exposure to different clinical environments, and the opportunity to build experience in theatre, ward-based care, and on-call settings in a structured and supported way.
