As a Fiber Characterization Technician, you will travel the country to perform advanced testing (OTDR, CD, PMD, AP) on long-haul networks. Using industry-leading Viavi equipment, you will ensure the integrity of the high-capacity fiber routes that power the world.
Location: 100% Travel (Based anywhere in the US) Rotation: 4 Weeks On / 1 Week Off (Home for the holidays/breaks)

What you’ll do
- Advanced Testing: Execute Bi-Directional OTDR, Chromatic Dispersion (CD), and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing.
- Precision Reporting: Analyze traces on-site to identify and troubleshoot micro-bends, bad splices, or fiber impairments.
- Equipment Mastery: Operate and maintain Viavi MTS-6000/8000 (or similar) platforms.
- Documentation: Deliver clean, client-ready data packages that prove the network is "100G/400G ready."
What you’ll need
- The Baseline: You have a solid foundation in fiber optics (Splicing or basic OTDR experience). We will provide the specific "Characterization" training.
- The Road Warrior Mentality: You enjoy the autonomy of travel. You’re comfortable navigating new cities and working independently or in small 2-man teams.
- Military/Tower Experience: (Preferred) We highly value the discipline of Veterans (Signal Corps/Cable Techs) or former Tower Climbers looking to transition to ground-based technical work.
- Technical Aptitude: You don't just "push buttons"—you want to understand the physics of light and signal loss.
- To be 18 years of age or older
- Authorization to work in the United States for this company
- High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or relevant work experience
- Previous Fiber Optic Testing and Install experience
- Qualified to lead fiber optic cleaning, scoping and Optical Loss / Power , OTDR, PMD and CD Testing
- Familiar with Telecom labeling standards
- You have a valid standard Driver's License with a minimum of 2 years driving experience
- You have an MVR record that is deemed acceptable by the company
- You are able to maintain a safe work environment
- Will be required to workdays, evening, or night hours and overtime, weekends, and out- of-town assignments for extended periods of time
- May be required to attend training to acquire mandatory certifications
- You are able to work in all weather conditions
- You are able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs as needed with or without assistance
- You are able to work over-time; after hours; on weekends, for emergencies or on-call
- You are able to carry a 28’ ladder from truck to pole
- You are able to work in tight spaces such as a crawl space
- You are able to work 3- feet above ground level and in enclosed space
