Overview
The Packaging Scientist works with a cross functional team in the development of packaging materials for new product development, continuous improvement, unlocking operating efficiency at our factories, driving out non-value-added costs, and ensuring source of supply. This position will strive for optimal packaging design from a brand, operations, cost perspective, and sustainability standpoint. This position will act as one of the key packaging experts for the company and will partner closely with our Marketing, Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain teams to drive success.
Responsibilities
- Works with cross-functional teams to help launch new products in our retail and/or foodservice business segments.
- Identifies opportunities and proposes solutions aimed at enhancing manufacturing efficiency of our packaging lines within our factories.
- Provides technical support to Operations and Engineering in the development of packaging to support continuous improvement efforts.
- Acts as technical lead to design, direct, and implement packaging cost saving projects.
- Leads development of packaging components that coincide with the company’s Packaging Sustainability strategy.
- Supports the technical effort to develop and approve packaging specifications.
- Fulfills the role of a technical service/troubleshooter when packaging problems at manufacturing facilities are beyond the scope of the plant personnel.
- Coordinates and executes packaging-related experiments, as well as plant trials; documents and communicates results, both written and oral, for review with minimal supervision.
- Understands, communicates, and mitigates technical risks associated with new packaging development.
- Maintains awareness of technical trends and developments in the packaging industry, for implementation within the company.
Qualifications
- Bachelors in Packaging Science, Engineering, or related field
- 7+ years work experience in food or CPG-related packaging industry
- Understanding of packaging materials, capabilities, and equipment
- Knowledge of packaging test methodology
- Knowledge of product development processes and commercialization processes
