Crime Scene and Forensic Technician
Part-Time 28 hours/week
Hourly Range: $21.67 - $23.84/hour DOQ
Join our team as a Crime Scene and Forensic Technician and play a critical role in law enforcement by ensuring proper evidence collection and preservation. Apply your skills in a dynamic and challenging environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Secure and assess crime scenes to prevent contamination of evidence
- Document scenes through photography, sketches, and detailed notes
- Identify, collect, and preserve physical evidence, including fingerprints, DNA, weapons, and trace materials
- Package and label evidence following strict chain-of-custody procedures
- Conduct preliminary analysis of evidence when applicable
- Maintain accurate records and reports of evidence collection and handling
- Transport evidence to laboratories or storage facilities
- Testify in court about evidence collection procedures and findings
- Operate and maintain forensic equipment and tools
- Collaborate with law enforcement personnel, including officers, detectives, forensic scientists, and Commonwealth Attorneys
- Assist detectives with crime scene processing and evidence preparation for the state lab
- Analyze evidentiary items and review surveillance footage for evidentiary value
- Transcribe interviews
- High School diploma or GED
- Basic familiarity with law enforcement or forensic procedures
- Ability to pass background checks and drug screening
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call duty
- Possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, forensic science, biology, or a related field
- Experience in photographing, video recording, documenting, and diagramming crime scenes
- Prior experience with crime scene investigation and evidence collection
- Internship or hands-on training in forensic or investigative work
- Experience with latent fingerprint processing and identification systems like AFIS
- Understanding of crime scene investigation principles and forensic evidence collection techniques
- Proficiency in crime scene documentation, photography, videography, and sketching
- Ability to maintain the integrity and confidentiality of evidence and information
- Strong communication skills for clear, accurate court testimony and report preparation
- Capacity to work independently and as part of an investigative team in high-pressure situations
- Expertise in using forensic tools, evidence tracking systems, and related technology
