Laboratory Assistant - Henderson Laboratory
Job Description
Job Summary:
Performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory. Collects and processes clinical laboratory specimens of the patient population.
Job Responsibilities:
Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, and transporting specimens.
Maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies. Orders supplies as needed.
Confirms eligibility, verifies insurance benefits, referrals, and authorization for identified patient registrations.
Communicates test results to appropriate healthcare providers.
Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic, and organized manner.
Performs clerical duties including answering phones, data entry, and filing.
Distributes supplies to the appropriate areas.
Assists in delivery of physicians' reports via phone and electronic distribution in a timely manner.
May peform venipuncture on patients of all age groups and other specimen collection consistently using proper therapeutic skills and according to procedures.
May perform waived Laboratory testing on-site and reports results according to government standards.
Assists the Medical Technologist/Technician with preparing specimens for analysis and testing, up to actual test performance.
Assists in overseeing all activities in the collections department throughout all campuses, which includes all aspects of specimen accessioning and processing.
Assists supervisors in ensuring staffing is adequate and all collections have been performed in a timely manner according to the department blood collection procedure.
Transports all specimen samples to the appropriate Laboratory department or courier pick-up areas.

Requires critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
Works under minimal supervision.
Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher required upon hire
Licensure/Certification/Registration
CLA - Certified Lab Assistant through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required upon hire OR
MLA - Medical Laboratory Assistant through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required upon hire OR
MLT - Certified Medical Laboratory Technician through American Medical Technologists (AMT) required upon hire OR
MLT - Certified Medical Laboratory Technician through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required upon hire
