Master's thesis in the field of cell-free synthesis systems
Job Description
Through its research in the fields of analytics, diagnostics, biosystems engineering and biosafety, the Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses Division (IZI-BB) addresses future-oriented and sustainable areas of research. The institute develops analytical and biotechnological solutions for medical issues, animal health, nutrition, cosmetics and the environment.
In the Bioprocesses group we are looking for a Master’s student to complete their thesis. For cell-free protein synthesis systems to be used efficiently and reproducibly, targeted quality control of the underlying cell extracts is essential. In particular, the content of functional ribosomes and signal recognition particle (SRP) strongly determines the performance of eukaryotic cell-free protein synthesis systems. Within the scope of the Master’s thesis, quantitative assays will be developed and established to compare ribosome and SRP levels in eukaryotic lysates and to integrate these into a routine quality control protocol.
Be part of change
Planned work packages include:
- Establishment and optimization of RNA isolation and RT qPCR protocols for quantitative detection of rRNA and 7SL RNA (SRP)
- Complementary hybridization-based methods (e.g. dot blot, simple FISH approaches) to validate RT qPCR results
- Biochemical characterization of lysates and correlation of the determined quality parameters with performance in cell-free protein synthesis reactions using complex model proteins
What you contribute
We are looking for highly motivated and committed students who enjoy working in a creative and open research environment. We welcome the following qualifications and experience:
- Ongoing Master’s studies in Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry or a related field
- Initial experience in molecular biology and biochemistry (e.g. PCR, plasmid preparation, protein detection methods); experience with RT qPCR and/or RNA work is an advantage but not mandatory
- Ability to work independently, careful and reliable working style, as well as team spirit and interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
What we offer
- Opportunities to contribute to innovative research projects and put the knowledge you’ve gained during your studies into practice
- Access to state-of-the-art technology and laboratory facilities
- Supervision of your master’s thesis by researchers and feedback on an individual basis
