WSP India is currently seeking a Principal Engineer – Process for Australia Mining Infrastructure Projects (Materials Handling Infrastructure). They shall be responsible for engineering design of Process with WSP Engineering and Client Standards. Previous experience in an EPCM environment in the O & G, Power plant, Chemical process plant, Mining processing industry is an asset.
A Team player and willing to work collaboratively with a motivated and highly successful team in Australia. The position will be for Mumbai location.
About the role:
We are seeking a Principal Process Engineer to support mining infrastructure projects across Australia, with a strong focus on pumping systems, pipeline networks, and water management systems.
This is a hybrid role combining process engineering, hydraulic analysis, and pipeline/pumping system design, rather than a conventional EPC-style discipline role.
The position will lead technical delivery, mentor engineers, and interface with multidisciplinary teams across Australia and India.
Technical Leadership
Lead design and analysis of:
Pumping systems (HP pumps, transfer systems)
Pipeline and network systems (water, slurry, dewatering)
Define system philosophy:
Pumping strategy and operating scenarios
Overpressure and surge protection philosophy
Brownfield integration and tie-ins
Provide technical assurance and review of key deliverables
Undertake and lead process design work for projects and studies including typical activities and deliverables: -
Concept design and layout development
Process descriptions and design basis
Material balances
Preparation of process flow diagrams & piping and instrumentation diagrams
Hazardous area classification/assessment
Preparation of equipment lists, equipment datasheets, specifications
Fluids lists and materials selection
Process hazard studies (including HAZOP) and design safety reviews
SIL assessment
Process basis of safety
Detailed process design calculations
Pressure relief design Utilities schedules, utilities flow diagrams and line sizing
Preparation of validation documentation
Commissioning plans and support
To ensure technical excellence in process engineering and design.
Develop and review:
Basis of Design (BoD)
Design criteria and technical specifications
P&IDs and process schematics
Hydraulic calculations and reports
Perform and validate:
Hydraulic modelling (PumpSim, or equivalent)
Flow scenarios and system behaviour
Pipe sizing and pressure rating
Review and guide:
Pipe class and valve class selection
Pump selection and system curves
Co-ordination of a design to ensure good interface with all other disciplines.
Participation in design reviews and technical audits.
Input into multi-discipline design programmes.
Contributing to processes to maintain change & cost control.
Develop the strength of the expertise within the process engineering department.
Support/generate cost and manhours estimate for proposals, studies and projects.
Act as Lead Process Engineer on selected projects controlling design, specifications, costs, hours, quality and programme.
Lead and deliver process engineering scopes for mining sustaining capital and brownfield projects.
Develop and review process design documentation, including mass and energy balances, PFDs, P&IDs, process descriptions, and design reports.
Support concept studies, feasibility assessments, and detailed design phases with process modelling and optimisation input.
Liaise with operations teams to understand plant performance issues and develop improvement strategies.
Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior process engineers and designers.
Ensure all designs comply with WSP’s quality standards, client requirements, and relevant Australian and international codes and standards.
Contribute to project planning, cost estimation, and risk assessments for process-related scopes.
Make technical presentations internally, to clients and to outside organisations.
To ensure that process safety issues are fully considered within projects eg. HAZOP, LOPA, hazardous area classification, SIL reviews.

13-16 years of experience in process engineering.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree & preferred master’s degree in mechanical engineering. PG diploma or certificate in Piping engineering would be an asset.
Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills.
Strong attention to the detail.
Familiar with working in a LEAN environment.
Experience with projects in Australia, New Zealand would be an advantage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in English.
C. Eng, P. Eng qualification would be an added advantage.
