About the role:

We are looking for a Line Manager to lead, support, and develop software engineering professionals in a Matrix organization.

This role is focused on people leadership, performance management, capability development, engagement, and stakeholder alignment. The Line Manager will not own day-to-day delivery execution, but must have a solid understanding of software delivery processes, engineering team dynamics, stakeholder landscape, and product development flow in order to manage people performance effectively and credibly.

The ideal candidate is a strong people leader with experience from a software development environment, able to work across Product, Project/Delivery, Architecture, Engineering, Quality, and other functions.

Purpose of the Role

The Line Manager is accountable for creating the conditions for employees to perform, grow, stay engaged, and contribute effectively to business outcomes.

The role ensures that people are:

  • clearly supported in their roles;

  • fairly evaluated based on real delivery context;

  • developed according to business and career needs;

  • aligned with organizational priorities;

  • engaged and retained;

  • supported through change, ambiguity, and matrix complexity.

In a Balanced Matrix setup, the Line Manager owns the people and capability agenda, while Product/Delivery roles own execution priorities, planning, and commitments. Strong collaboration between these roles is essential.

Areas of responsibility:

People Management

  • Lead and support a group of software engineering professionals.

  • Conduct regular 1:1s focused on performance, motivation, development, well-being, and feedback.

  • Build trust-based relationships with employees and create a healthy leadership environment.

  • Support onboarding, role clarity, engagement, retention, and individual motivation.

  • Identify early signs of overload, disengagement, conflict, or performance risk.

  • Act as a stable leadership anchor in a complex matrix setup.

Performance Management

  • Define and communicate clear individual performance expectations.

  • Evaluate performance based on evidence, stakeholder input, delivery contribution, behavior, and growth.

  • Collect structured feedback from Product, Project/Delivery, Architecture, Scrum Masters, technical experts, and relevant stakeholders.

  • Differentiate performance fairly and transparently.

  • Recognize strong performance and address underperformance early.

  • Support employees in understanding how their work contributes to product, delivery, quality, and business outcomes.

  • Distinguish between individual performance issues and systemic delivery/process constraints.

Development and Career Growth

  • Own development conversations and Personal Development Plans.

  • Identify strengths, growth areas, potential, and career aspirations.

  • Support career progression, competence growth, mentoring, and learning opportunities.

  • Connect individual development with business needs, technology direction, product priorities, and organizational capability gaps.

  • Encourage ownership, learning agility, collaboration, quality mindset, and engineering maturity.

Stakeholder Management in the Matrix

  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Project Managers, Architects, Scrum Masters, and other functional leaders.

  • Maintain regular feedback loops with stakeholders to understand employee contribution, collaboration, and performance.

  • Support alignment between people capacity, skill maturity, and delivery expectations.

  • Help resolve ambiguity, conflicting expectations, and priority tension affecting employees.

  • Escalate people, capability, or capacity risks constructively.

  • Ensure employees are not left alone to navigate matrix complexity.

Capability and Organizational Development

  • Identify skill gaps, competence needs, and succession risks.

  • Contribute to workforce planning, hiring, staffing input, and capability development.

  • Support a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer value.

  • Promote knowledge sharing and professional standards within the line.

  • Contribute to improvements in leadership practices, feedback culture, and organizational effectiveness.

To succeed in your role, you should possess the following skills and competencies:

The candidate should have experience in or close exposure to software delivery.
This does not necessarily mean the person must be a former developer, but they should understand how software teams operate and how value is delivered through product development.

Required background
